“Harry, there must be something we can do to help them. The boy is so happy.” She smiled, her voice turned soft. “Did you see his face when he saw the pool? I didn’t think I’d be able to get him out of it. I’m sure if Lily hadn’t been there, coaxing him with s’mores and chocolate milk, he’d still be swimming around, shriveled as a prune.” Her laughter spilled over him, made him join in.
“Lily’s taken him under her wing, hasn’t she? Just like a mama bird.” If the boy had to leave, the Casherdons wouldn’t be the only ones who’d be heartbroken. Lily would be, too, and just thinking about it left a hole in Harry’s gut.
Greta leaned toward him, said in a low voice, “I thought you might have a chat with the woman.”
A chat? Harry studied his wife. The afternoon breeze blew wisps of blonde hair about her head, forming a halo, like an angel. His angel. No matter how many days he woke up next to her, he still couldn’t believe she was here, that she thought him worthy of her. Of course, the last asshole she’d married was no prize, but Greta was a mature woman now who knew her own mind and her heart. If she thought him worthy, then damn it, he’d spend every breathing minute proving he was just that. She wanted him to have a sit-down with Cash’s ex? Yeah, he could do that. In fact, lying, treacherous women were right up his alley. Visions of Gloria Blacksworth flitted through his head. What he wouldn’t give for one more conversation with that woman! He’d tell her to take her miserable self-righteousness straight to hell. But thanks to the Man Upstairs, he was pretty sure she was already there.
“Will you do it, Harry? Will you visit this woman and see if you can convince her to let the boy stay with Cash and Tess?” Her expression turned fierce, her words determined. “Give them all a chance to be a family here in Magdalena?”
What were the odds the woman would agree? Harry rubbed his jaw, considered the options. He’d known a lot of women like Cash’s ex, and in his experience, the question wasn’t about odds, but rather, how much would it take to get her to agree? With people like that, it was always about money and what it could buy…like a kid or a new life. Yeah, he’d talk to the woman. In fact, he looked forward to it. Harry squeezed his wife’s hand, met her gaze. “I’ll see what I can do. Now stop the tears, okay? You know I can’t stand it when you cry.”
She sniffed, leaned forward and kissed him. “You are a wonderful man, Harry Blacksworth. My very own angel walking this earth.”
Greta was so far off base with that comment she was in another universe, but no way would Harry tell her. If she thought he was an angel, then he damn well was going to act like one and see if he could help the Casherdons.
