ALMA: It’s Saturday I get up early to slop the hogs, feed the chickens, and rake the yard so I can watch The Monkees and Kookla, Fran and Ollie. I’m inside the house. I hear Odelia (ODELIA) “JOHN!” (ALMA) I look out and see a tall light-skinned man. He walks slowly up to the house–(ODELIA) “John–ooh baby–I so glad ta see ya–ohh baby I does miss ya–wanna see Alma-see yo baby.” (ALMA) She throws her arms around his neck. He removes her arms and pats her on the head. He pats her on the head like a dog. He says (JOHN) “Where she at?” (ALMA) He had a Geechie accent like people from Russelville. I wonder if he is from Russelville but not too many light-skinned people live here. Again he says (JOHN) “Where she at?” (ALMA) Odelia yells/roars (ODELIA) “ALMA/ALMA COME OUT AND SEE YO DADDY!” (ALMA) I go and stand by the screen door. He-John–“my father” says (JOHN) “Come on out heah gal!” (ALMA) I open the screen door and walk slowly toward him. He, “John”–my father–the man Odelia said had “purty yella skin”–lurches toward me smelling of gin. I know it’s gin because Odelia smells the same way when she drinks it. (JOHN) “Damn she a big ole ting–she ain’t as black as you but probably be big like you.” (ALMA) His skin is red/greasy/shiny/gin-filled. (JOHN) “Her face kinda long–horse face like you. How I knows dis gal belong ta me?”
