The reception was, as Rosalind had anticipated, lavish almost to the point of vulgarity. Sir Michael had spared no expense when it came to introducing his new bride to friends and political colleagues. Rosalind could see that the guests from London were quietly impressed, although the local gentry obviously thought that Sir Michael had gone too far, and many of the older members of society frowned on the match anyway. Patricia, however, seemed oblivious to any undercurrents of disapproval and she wore the mantle of Lady Greystone as if it had been made solely for her. Rosalind knew that her sister was acting the part but Christina did not seem to be amused. She clung to Oscar’s arm as if she were afraid to let him go and it was obvious that she resented having a stepmother similar in age to herself. After her mother’s early demise Christina had taken on the role of hostess, and it was clear that she evidently did not like being usurped by her old friend. Sylvia bore the change in circumstances with better grace.
Louise and her parents were guests but Louise had volunteered to look after Tommy and Nancy, and keep an eye on Dolly, who had been left in the care of Ivy, one of Sir Michael’s most trusted housemaids. This left Rosalind free to enjoy socialising without having to worry about her baby, and confident of knowing that she would be called upon when Dolly awakened for her next feed.
She was on her way to the nursery when Hester waylaid her. ‘You really should think about hiring a wet nurse, poppet. I know you adore the little scrap, but you will be tied to her until she is old enough to be weaned.’
Rosalind smiled. ‘I wouldn’t have it any other way, Hester. To tell you the truth I’m glad of the excuse to leave the party for a while. I’ve had quite enough of Patsy acting as if she’s been crowned Queen of England, and Sylvia is following Alex like a devoted puppy.’
‘He’s an eligible bachelor, Rosie. That’s a fact you shouldn’t forget. I doubt if he’ll remain your devoted admirer for the rest of his life.’
‘Hester! That’s uncalled for.’
‘Maybe, but it’s true nonetheless. You are married to Piers, and even if you were divorced or widowed you still couldn’t marry his brother. It’s against the law.’
‘I know that. You don’t have to remind me again, Hester. Alex is my good friend and I want it to stay that way. If he finds someone to love and who returns his feelings I’ll be happy for both of them.’
‘Forgive me if I don’t believe you.’ Hester gave her a quick hug. ‘Go and look after the little one, and then come back and enjoy the party.’
