Roz nodded. ‘Mr Jones helped bring me to England.’ Realising an explanation was needed, she told him of the accident, finishing with: ‘I never saw them after that, but I know he’ll come here as soon as he arrives in England.’

Mr Garmin smiled reassuringly at both girls. ‘Your father worked really hard to get everything sorted so that you could leave the country; there’s not a doubt in my mind that he would have a back-up plan.’

Roz breathed a sigh of relief. It was good to hear someone who actually knew of her father, albeit from a distance, confirming that they had as much faith in him as Roz had. ‘You’re right, he had all eventualities covered – apart from the accident, of course, but no one could have foreseen that.’

Mr Garmin pulled a piece of paper towards him and looked expectantly at Roz, pen in hand. ‘Where can I get hold of you?’

As Roz read out the address, he looked at her with surprise.

‘I must admit, I didn’t know there were any houses on Crooked Lane,’ he said.

Roz glanced at Mabel. ‘It’s not a house exactly …’ She hesitated as she thought of the best way to describe the loft where she was residing.

‘It’s more like a flat,’ Mabel explained, much to Roz’s relief.

‘I see, well, you learn something new every day.’ Mr Garmin retrieved a piece of paper from his jacket pocket and handed it to Roz. ‘This came for you a few days back.’

Roz held an envelope that was addressed to her. She didn’t recognise the handwriting. She looked up at Mr Garmin and Mabel who were both eyeing her expectantly. Her heart racing, she opened the envelope and quickly read the contents of the letter. When she got to the end, she looked up, a broad smile stretching across her cheeks.

Mabel was watching her eagerly. ‘Is it from your father?’

Roz shook her head. ‘Felix!’ Handing the letter to Mabel, she explained who Felix was to Mr Garmin.

‘Good to know someone’s looking out for you,’ he said, getting to his feet.

‘He’s been wonderful,’ said Roz, as they followed Mr Garmin out of the room.

He led the way to the front door of the building. ‘If I hear anything I’ll be sure to get in touch, but should anything change in the meantime please let me know.’

‘I will, thank you. I’m sure we’ll hear something soon,’ said Roz, trying to remain positive.

Saying his goodbyes, Mr Garmin turned and headed back to the lift.

‘Fancy Felix thinking to write to you here,’ said Mabel as they left. ‘I can’t wait to meet him.’

‘I can’t see that happening any time soon,’ said Roz. ‘I’ve no idea where Scotland Road is, but I do know where Scotland is.’

Mabel grinned. ‘The Scottie’s not far from us. In fact, we could go there now if you like?’

Roz stopped dead. ‘Really? Scotland Road is here, in Liverpool?’
