Callum clicked his fingers to gain Roz’s attention. ‘You can get out of that lot before you go,’ he said, indicating the clothes which Roz was currently wearing. He turned to Suzie. ‘Fetch her one of your skirts and a blouse.’ Glancing at Roz’s shoes, he added, ‘Some of your old boots too.’

‘Why should I?’ Suzie stared at him in disbelief. ‘What’s wrong with the stuff she’s got on?’

‘Because I ruddy well told you to!’ snapped Callum. He turned back to Roz who was staring at him, open-mouthed. ‘Don’t just stand there, strip.’

Roz, still gawping at him, shook her head. ‘I’m not getting undressed in front of you, and as Suzie said, what’s wrong with what I’m wearing?’

Callum had had enough of being questioned. He strode towards Roz, grasped her suitcase and threw it behind him, then grabbed her clothing by the collar.

Scared that he was going to wrench her clothes from her body, Roz held up a hand. ‘I’ll do it myself!’ she said hastily, taking the skirt and top Suzie was holding out.

Callum let go of her, giving her a shove as he stepped away. Turning her back to the Haggartys, Roz stripped down to her vest and knickers before hastily donning the scruffy clothing she’d been given. Once she had fastened all but the top button of the blouse, she turned back to see Callum pointedly staring at her feet. Roz fastened the remaining button, then stooped down to remove her shoes and replace them with the awful, threadbare plimsolls which Suzie had handed her.

Thanking her with a sarcastic smile, Callum gathered her clothes off the floor and shoved them into the suitcase. ‘You won’t have no need for these,’ he said, patting the side of the case. He glanced towards the door. ‘Off you go!’

As Roz left she could hear the Haggartys bickering furiously with each other. She carefully climbed down the unstable steps and made her way through the warehouses towards the docks.
