“So we’re going to follow you but stay out of sight,” he was saying. “I got two cars on call if you get in trouble. All I need is McGrath admitting he planned the robbery or talking about why he killed Eddie or both. And I want to know where the Yo-Yo hid the money. We’ve been over your route with a fine-tooth comb. Figure he dropped it and one of Cal’s boys picked it up. You sure you didn’t see him do anything with it?”
“I didn’t see anything except the road. They were on my case, making me work pretty damn hard, you know? And then your boys were making me work harder.”
“You know if you’re dicking with me, I will bury you in the worst possible way, right?”
Spencer stopped and turned to him. “Why don’t you wake up? You saw where I figured in the plan. I was collateral. So all they told me was what I needed to know. Just like you did with Caitlyn Dunn.”
They looked at each other, neither with any respect. People swirled around them. “So let’s just do this thing, Detective.”
They emerged from the artificially cooled building into the baking heat of the lot. As Scott led him over to an ops truck, Spencer saw Chris leaning against his Prius. Chris gave him a discreet nod.
Inside the truck, Spencer sat down to take the weight off his leg. He was sweating already, and his stomach was kicking up from the antibiotics. The doc had wanted to keep him on an antibiotic IV for another week.
A police surveillance technician proceeded to wire Spencer up.
“Where are you going to be if I get out, so I can find you?” asked Spencer.
“Lincoln and Grand River. And I’ve got an unmarked watching the depot right now. And McGrath’s there, so we need to roll.”
When the wire setup was done, Spencer got in the rental car that the DPD had provided for him. It was a stick shift. He started up and drove across the lot. The ops truck followed.
In spite of the pain, Spencer was managing the driving and the gear changes. But when he got to the exit, he suddenly turned the wheel sharply, taking the car against the sharp curb corner. The tire blew. He stopped.
In no time, Scott was at his window. “What the fuck are you doing?”
“You try driving a stick with one leg for Chrissakes.”
Chris suddenly appeared behind Scott. “Spence, use Penny. She’s an auto. You’ve got to get this done.”
They both looked questioningly at Scott. “Whatever,” he said. “I don’t give a shit. Let’s be green.” He turned back to the ops truck.
“I’ll just get my bag,” said Chris, handing Spencer his keys.
Spencer yelled out to Scott. “Lincoln and Grand River, right?”
