The Yo-Yo looked unsure. Spencer had no time to explain. The lead pursuit was bumping their tail, looking for its chance. “Just be ready, you two.”
He slowed down some more, made it look like he was deciding on his next move. He wasn’t. He just wanted to make sure the cops stayed tight.
They turned almost as one into the drive of the derelict factory. Spencer accelerated. The cops did the same. With several cars in support and the pack behind them, plus air support, they sensed the kill was imminent.
Except they didn’t have air support. The chopper was in a hold a mile back. They couldn’t just fly into Coleman International’s airspace without permission. They were awaiting clearance from the tower.
Spencer headed for the trench in front of the dark entranceway. He rode the Subaru onto the planks he’d laid across the gap and yanked the hand brake just as his rear wheels got to the other side, pulling the planks with him. They fell in the gap. The lead pursuit had no hope of braking, and they followed the planks right into the trench. Forty to zero in a big crunch of metal and forgotten concrete.
Spencer drove across the dark hall, not caring about the bricks and bottles biting at his tires. He drove the Subaru’s passenger-side fender right into the doorway and floored the gas pedal. All four wheels belched out thick smoke. The smoke billowed around the car, and they were lost to view.
“Follow me,” said Spencer as he bailed. Then all three of them were out and clambering over the hood and through the doorway. The Yo-Yo turned and fired a few shots in the general direction of the cops to keep them cautious, buying time. The Yo-Yo, ice-cold in an emergency and especially so when he had no choices. He’d already dodged twenty years once in his life. That sort of luck doesn’t come twice.
They thundered down the stairs, Spencer leading the way, Eddie clutching the bag, the Yo-Yo catching up.
They hit the basement. When the factory was alive, stock had been loaded or unloaded here from the railway yards. Now the Buick waited for them.
Spencer opened the trunk. “Throw it in here, Eddie, and get the hell in, both of you.”
Neither needed a second telling. Spencer watched them dive into the Buick. He slammed the trunk shut, keeping his finger on the release button as he did so. The trunk stayed slightly ajar.
