“In that account, by today. And there’s one other thing. It might seem a little strange, but it’s been bugging me. Cal.”

“Don’t worry about him, you’ll get the money.”

“Maybe, but I want to make peace with the guy. Can you get him up here? And while we’re waiting, I need a piss.” He didn’t, but he knew McGrath would need a moment to tell Cal to play nice.

In the bathroom, Spencer tipped the wrap Chris had bought onto the shelf underneath the mirror. He messed it around, a line done in haste, and tipped the rest in the sink where it glistened enticingly: a quality product, as Vincent’s always was. He turned on the tap and watched the water swirl the coke away. He left the distinctively folded paper on top of the trash.

Cal was already in McGrath’s office by the time he got back.

“Hey, Cal.” Spencer played it as if he’d been psyching up to eat this humble pie for a while. He hesitated. The silence in the room became awkward.

“Let’s all take a seat,” said McGrath.

“Listen, Cal, what I did with your car, it was wrong. I just needed a job and—”

“What’s done is done. Forget about it.”

“Cal,” said McGrath. “Let the guy speak for Chrissakes.”

Cal shrugged. Spencer plowed on.

“So I’ve organized a little something for you, to, uh, make amends.”

Cal eyed him suspiciously. Spencer pretended to read it as curiosity. “Yeah, it’s not a big thing. I ordered you four new Pirellis. Guy’s going to deliver them today.”

“You’re saying four tires are gonna turn up here? You could have just paid Action.”

“Yeah, well, since I’m buying, I figured you wouldn’t mind if I went through my own sources.”

Cal looked at Spencer as if he were the most slack-jawed dumbass that ever drew breath if he thought they could be friends or that he’d have any days after the next day. But Cal seemed more willing to follow orders these days, so when Spencer offered his hand, Cal took it.

“We’re good?” asked Spencer sincerely, almost desperately.

“Sure, we’re good.”

Cal left them.

“That Buick down in the loading bay, Dom, covered in dust. Whose is it?”

“A guy called Rosso’s, before he moved up in the world. Why?”

“Can I have it? I want to do some recces, and I don’t want the CCTV getting used to my car over in Dearborn.”

McGrath thought about it. “Sure, good idea. Get Denny to give it a jump. When you’re done with it, get rid of it, though.”

Later, as McGrath watched Spencer leave in the Buick, Eddie appeared at his side.

“Why’d he want that car?”

“Wants to do some recces.”
