Spencer knew how it was sounding. It was sounding like it always did with McGrath.

You think you been on a ride, boy? Oh no, that was nothing. I’ll show you a ride. We’re just getting started.

“Pretty interesting, Dom.”

McGrath nodded. “Over in Dearborn Heights, just west of Rouge River Park, there’s an armored delivery company. Every morning, they roll out of them gates and some of them head to one of the big banks in Downtown.”

Already, Spencer wanted to be out of that room so badly it was making his stomach burn.

“So I don’t know if you know this, but most armored truck crimes, they’re inside jobs. This company takes heavy-duty precautions. Only when their trucks are on the road do they get radioed which bank they have to get to. At the same time, they get an access code which authorizes them to pick up the money. And they get told to take different routes, to keep everyone guessing. So end of next month is going to be the last day of an unblemished employment record for crewman Max Petrovsky.

“You remember those demolition companies we were talking about? Well, Max is going to be riding shotgun in the truck that supplies a bunch of sites. They got CCTV in the cabs of these trucks, so Max has learned to work his phone by feel, and as soon as they get the bank name and access code, he’s going to AirDrop the info for ten minutes. When his other hand’s against the window that means he’s sending. When you—”

Spencer sighed and shook his head.

“What?”

Spencer’s tone was resigned. “I’ll be following him, real close. Then, just like before, Eddie picks it up on his phone and I drive fast to the bank and Johnny Boy’ll use the code to collect before your guy Max’s truck gets there.”

Johnny Boy smiled. For a drunk cokehead, Spencer could be pretty sharp.

“Close,” said McGrath.

“The Yo-Yo’ll be with you,” said Johnny Boy. “Not me and Eddie.”

“It should be two of us,” said Eddie all of a sudden, like he’d been chewing on the matter.

“What do you mean? You go as well?” asked Johnny Boy.

“Yeah. We were talking about it.” Eddie waved at Cal. “What if the Yo-Yo’s phone doesn’t work? We got one shot.”

Johnny Boy looked at McGrath questioningly.

“Fine,” said McGrath. Then he turned back to Spencer. “The big thing, though, I mean what really matters, is that all of this has to be done without getting interest from the cops. If they knew something like this was going down and they got aerial support, then . . . well, it’s not like in the movies. You can’t get away once they’ve tagged your ass with a chopper. Not even you, Spencer.”
