“Anonymous source? So anyone can phone up, dish some dirt, and, big surprise, here we are?”

“You mean a malicious referral? That isn’t the case in this regard because my investigations have shown it to have more than a basis in truth, to be entirely true, in fact.”

“Who called you up? It was Abby’s school, right? Well just let me say—”

“If I did know the source, Mister Burnham, it would contravene all rules for me to divulge it.” She held up a thick sheaf of papers. “So I have here a breakdown from your doctor of your medications, urine tests—”

“Excuse me? You’re not allowed access to my medical records.”

“You gave us this access, Mister Burnham.”

“What are you even talking about? I would not do that. Ever.”

Caitlyn hesitated. She flicked through his file. “You’re mistaken. You’ve ticked the boxes granting us all these permissions. And signed the form. You’ve filled in these forms that way every time you’ve seen your case officer. No, wait, I stand corrected—from the third time onwards.”

Christ, Lonnie! So much for trust and professionalism.

He looked to Caitlyn as if he was about to speak. She gave him a moment to do so before continuing.

“So, the results showed high levels of alcohol, cocaine, and marijuana, besides antidepressants and sleep medication. This brand of antidepressant shouldn’t be mixed with alcohol and is known to raise the body’s tolerance to drugs like cocaine. You’ve said to Lonnie on several occasions that you often have your daughter in the car. Despite requests from your previous case officer, you never supplied any negative drug test results or consented to ongoing drug screening. It was a serious procedural infringement on her part to overlook this. I work differently. Now, on to your bank statements and financial status. You recently filed for bankruptcy. You mentioned earlier that you have rent to pay, however you no longer rent private accommodation. You left the address this office had for you without leaving a forwarding address and owing two months’ rent. This is the answer your daughter gave when she was asked to describe her father’s bedroom.”

Caitlyn removed a page from the file and held it up for Spencer to see. It was a drawing of a couch. “You’re with me so far on this, Mister Burnham?”

Spencer looked at this woman and couldn’t work out which he hated more. Her or the fact that he was being so comprehensively busted by her.
