A shudder runs through me at the thought of the prophetic woman and her Speaking ability. I don’t understand how her power works; all I know is that when I met her, she was … odd. Until today, I didn’t realize she was responsible for the Remnants learning the whereabouts of breakout Speakers, though it makes sense. It’s not as if there’s a phone app for this kind of thing. Liana must see visions that keep the Remnants informed—and I can only assume Lengard has their own Speaker with a similar ability doing the same.
Taking my place beside Cami, I give her a quick smile to show that my conversation with Kael went well. I then glance out the front windows and see that we’re approaching a small jetty almost directly beneath the northern entrance to the Harbour Bridge. A chill goes through me as my gaze continues upward to see what rises just behind the wharf—a hulking cartoonish face bordered by two towers.
The gateway into Luna Park.
“Liana’s vision showed that the Speaker we’re after is hiding inside the amusement park,” Arryn says, and I fight against shuddering a second time. I’ve never been a fan of amusement parks, especially ones with ginormous clown faces at their entrances.
“Male or female, she couldn’t tell us,” Arryn continues. “Nor could she say what their ability is. We’re going in blind. But we have to presume that this teenager is as scared and uncertain as we were when we first started Speaking. They may act out if cornered, so in case you can’t find a way to calm them or contain them with your own power …”
She looks pointedly at Pandora, who steps forward and places the crate of tennis balls on the deck before us.
“I’ve infused all of these with a fast-acting tranquilizer,” Pandora says, her violet hair gleaming from the lights of the wharf. “Just throw one at our new Speaker friend and they’ll drop instantly.”
“They can also be used for self-defense if we run into unwanted company,” Arryn adds as the yacht continues slowly toward the jetty. “If Lengard arrives—or if they’re already here—then it’s imperative that we avoid capture.” She eyes each of us, her gaze lingering on me longer than the others. “Our mission is to retrieve this new Speaker, whatever it takes. Liana says there’s something different about this one, that they’re important. Let’s make sure we have each other’s backs out there, and we’ll all get home safely. Okay?”
We all voice our agreement, and then Arryn turns to face Cami and me directly, clenching and unclenching her jaw. “You two, stay close and watch how we do things. Healer, if Lengard is here, your job is to identify who we’re facing and what their powers are. Creator,”—her black eyes lock on mine—“stay out of our way and don’t try to show off. Understood?”
“We have names, you know,” Cami mutters under her breath. As for me, I’m beyond words.
