CARRIE: What’s the point of staying there, Dad?
EMERY: Well, I live here. Where would I go? New York?
CARRIE: I asked you before, Dad. You said you couldn’t leave because of the dogs. It’s been a couple months. They haven’t come back.
EMERY: It’s just, it is a lot to ask.
CARRIE: Is it though?
EMERY: (Sighs) Listen, I’ve been through a lot. Just, in my life. And life is constant and I’m tired and I’ve spent all of my life in Missouri. I got my brothers and sisters right where I want them, about an hour away. This is where I’m staying, this is where I’m dying, and it’s just going to have to stay that way. And this isn’t because I think what you are saying is ridiculous. If I had the gumption in my heart to do it, I don’t think I would. I’m just tired, honey. I’m tired as hell. And even if you get me up there where you and your boyfriend can come see me once a month outside of the city, away from your mother and her boyfriend and everything, I’d still live and die the same way. I’ve lived my life a very specific way, without fuss. And you been fussing about this for awhile, and I need you to know, you already know, you need to know I’m staying here. It just is what it is. But I love you, and I thank you for caring. But I’m just tired, honey.
CARRIE: You’re just so ignorant, Dad. That whole damn state has crept into your bones and died.
EMERY: Well, there it all is then.
Emery heard a click, and a dial tone. He slowly clambered to stand and walked over to the kitchen sink, shuffling his feet the whole time. He reached up and grabbed a small coffee mug that said Me Want Coffee on it. He poured some instant coffee into it, filled it with water from the faucet, and placed it in the microwave. He listened to the microwave hum for a full minute without moving or having a single thought in his head. When it dinged, he took a small spoon and stirred it. He held it delicately with one hand and shuffled back to his walker by the kitchen table. He shuffled with the walker back to the recliner, rigidly wobbled in front of the chair, and threw himself backward into it. He rolled back and forth to get his ass in the right position before extending the legs. Emery ran his hands through the crevices of the recliner until he found the remote control. The TV was showing some poker event that came on after he had fallen asleep. Emery changed it to put on the movie Con Air.
