Danny What?

Charlotte I booked a flight. That’s it.

Danny What? What d’you mean you’re going away?

Charlotte I’m gonna travel. Live abroad. Teach.

Danny How long for?

Charlotte Year or two.

Danny What? When?

Charlotte In like five hours or something.

Danny What? You joking?

Charlotte No. No, I’m not joking.

Danny Why?

Charlotte Why? Coz I’ve been in the same part of town my whole life. I could live anywhere in the world, anywhere, but I’ve never even moved across the river. I want an adventure. I could go to teach somewhere completely new. I could be helping people.

Danny You can’t go.

Charlotte Why not?

Danny Well, you teach here. What about your job?

Charlotte It’s all sorted.

Danny What about your flat?

Charlotte My sister’s gonna take the room.

Danny Well, what about me then?

Charlotte I can’t waste anymore of my time waiting for someone else to make me happy.

Danny You don’t have to wait.

Charlotte I need to do this, Dan.

Danny Well, I’ll wait for you then. I’ll wait for you, Charlotte, coz I love you and I wanna be –

Charlotte You won’t wait.

Danny I fuckin’ will! I will.

Charlotte You won’t, Dan. You say it because it seems like the thing to say. You want it to be a big romantic gesture. But it isn’t, I know you too well. You might miss me, after you’ve got home with some girl you met at a party and she’s said something stupid, but you won’t wait. Coz the thing is, Dan, you can’t put anyone else’s feelings in front of your own. It’s not that you don’t want to, it’s that you don’t know how.

Danny I do know how. Take as long as you need. I’ll be here. And when you come back I’ll prove it. I don’t want no one else. There’s no one else for me. I’ll wait for you.

Charlotte I don’t want to hear you saying things that sound nice coz you think I want to hear them. I want you to be honest.

Danny I am being honest.

Charlotte It’s OK to say – I’m gutted, and I’ll miss you. That’s enough. You don’t have to tell me that you’re gonna be heartbroken and fuckin’ celibate, coz it’s just not true. I know what you’re like. I gave you so many chances. And every time you showed me that you didn’t really care. Not really. Not when it came down to it.

Danny Don’t go, Charlotte. I don’t want you to go.

Charlotte Come with me then.

Danny What?

Charlotte Go pack a bag, get your passport. I’ll meet you at the airport. Let’s do it if you want to, Dan. Let’s go. Me and you.

Danny What, now?

Charlotte Yeah.

Danny Well, obviously I can’t just, I mean, you know, it’s –. The band. We’re a unit. I can’t just leave. And work, I mean my name’s on the rota till next month. And I gotta feed Dillinja while mum’s at my auntie’s. I can’t just go like that.
