Ted Like what?

Danny I dunno. Something.

Ted Like what?

Danny Dunno. Chef. Have his own restaurant.

Ted He couldn’t cook an egg, mate.

Danny Cameraman then. Or a vet or something. I dunno. Anything. Fuckin’ lawyer.

Ted Lawyer?

Danny Fireman.

Ted He would have made a good lawyer actually.

Danny Train driver.

Ted Know what I heard about train drivers?

Danny What?

Ted If you drive a train and you hit three people. Like, if three people jump out in front of your train.

Danny Yeah?

Ted You get paid leave and a pension rest of your life.

Danny Really?

Ted Yeah, even if you only been on the job a week.

Danny That’s mental.

Ted Sounds alright though, don’t it? I was thinking about doing it.

Danny Yeah?

Ted Couldn’t handle it though, if someone did jump out.

Danny Never forgive yourself would ya?

Ted Three times as well. Fuck you right up that would.

Danny Still, he woulda been something, Ted. He would have.

Ted Well, we’ll never know now, will we?

Danny No. S’pose not.

Ted Such a waste.Pause. They drink.

Danny How’s work?

Ted Yeah, it’s alright.

Danny Same old same old eh?

Ted Something like that, yeah.

Danny I dunno how you do it, mate.

Ted Well, you just do, don’t ya? You just do.

Danny Yeah, s’pose.

Ted What about you? How’s the band and that?

Danny Oh yeah, great yeah. Well, you know, we don’t have a drummer at the moment, but we have got these t-shirts we made. And I met a guy the other day who said he’d be up for drumming for us, and he’s pretty good as far as I can tell. Well, I ain’t heard him drum, but, he looks like a drummer. Long hair, tattoos and that. Nice guy.

Ted Tell you the truth, Dan, I can’t fuckin’ stand it.

Danny Can’t stand what?

Ted It’s not like you set out to end up nowhere is it.

Danny You ain’t nowhere, mate. You’re working hard.

Ted I need to change it up, Dan. If not for me, for him. I mean, look.

Danny What?

Ted Well, look at his tree.

Danny What about it?

Ted Even that changes four times a year. Know what I mean?

Danny Yeah, I do. I do. I been thinking the same thing.

Ted Course you have.

Danny Day like today, you think, fuck. Don’t you? All of a sudden ten years has gone by. All the things you done, that’s just what you done. You weren’t even thinking. But now, suddenly it’s made you who you are. You can’t go back,

can ya?

Ted No, you can’t.

Danny So, I’m making some changes right now, as it goes. I had an epiphany, didn’t I.

Ted An epiphany?

Danny Yeah, you know. Like a realisation.

Ted Yeah, I know what it fuckin’ means, mate. What did you realise?

Danny That it’s time, innit, it’s time now.

Ted Time for what?

Danny Time for me to sort my shit out.
