Stephen couldn’t have agreed more. He had the feeling he would quite enjoy paying James Grecken a little visit in the very near future.

Dale scrutinised Bailey over the top of his latte. They were sitting in a café in Stratford, Bailey having suggested that the two of them grab a coffee following the planning session earlier that morning.

‘Is this about what I think it’s about?’ he asked.

‘What?’

‘That phone call.’

‘Was it that obvious?’

‘You went off into the bathroom and then when you came back in, you looked even more shell-shocked than when you’d answered the phone. Who was it?’

Bailey chewed her lip in debate, still unsure about telling Dale the truth of the matter. But then telling him about it was the whole reason she’d dragged him here in the first place.

He stared at her inquisitively with his bright blue eyes.

‘Bailey?’ he said in a warning voice, raising his eyebrows. ‘Are you up to something you shouldn’t be?’

She took a deep breath. ‘I couldn’t tell Frank because I know he wouldn’t approve.’

‘Tell Frank what?’

‘Promise you won’t tell him.’

He looked puzzled. ‘Well, you haven’t told me what this is all about yet.’

She stared at him steadfastly.

He threw up his hands. ‘Okay, I promise not to tell Frank.’

She paused and took an even deeper breath.

‘I’m going to meet Mister Snigiss tomorrow morning.’

Dale’s eyes widened and his mouth dropped open. ‘Bailey, you were explicitly told to desist in that investigation!’

‘I have to go. I have to find out about my sister. I have to talk to Mister Snigiss before the Molloys get to him. I know they’re working hard to identify him, and I don’t know how close they are. If they kill him, I’ll never find out about Jennifer.’

Bailey knew her father didn’t have much longer left, his condition having deteriorated substantially in the past few weeks, and she was therefore more conscious than ever of the urgency driving her quest to confront Mister Snigiss.

Dale shook his head incredulously. ‘You are one stubborn person, Bailey Morgan. You just don’t give up, do you?’

‘I’m placing my trust in you, Dale. You won’t tell Frank, will you?’ she pleaded.

He looked conflicted for a few moments, then sighed. ‘No, I won’t tell Frank. But I feel that what you’re doing might be dangerous, Bailey. You might get hurt. Or worse…’

‘That’s why I’m telling you,’ she said. ‘There’s no one else I can tell who I trust enough.’

A modest flattered smile twitched across his face.

She fixed him with a long look. ‘You know how when a girl goes on a date with someone she’s never met before, she tells her friends and family where she’s going, just in case something happens to her? Well, that’s what this is. I wanted to let you know where I was meeting him just in case something happens to me.’

His eyes widened in consternation. ‘This is no date, Bailey. By all accounts, this is someone really dangerous.’
