‘You think they got blown up because of this?’ asked Frank.
Bailey shrugged. ‘Seems like more than a coincidence.’
‘This is obviously very important and highly sensitive material,’ said Dale. ‘I’ll pass it onto the murder investigation team with the utmost priority. May I take this?’
Bailey nodded. She closed the video player and extracted the memory stick from the laptop and handed it to Dale.
Frank watched Dale secrete the kitten-themed memory stick in his pocket. He seemed to be caught in thought. He looked at Bailey with a frown.
‘Why were you even pursuing this in the first place, Bailey?’ he asked. ‘You’re supposed to be focusing on the guns.’
She glanced at Dale and took a deep breath.
‘Well, I’m glad you asked because that’s the other big thing I was about to tell you. I recently became aware of an angle in Adrian’s murder case that might relate to my sister’s abduction.’
Frank raised one eyebrow. He knew all about Jennifer. Bailey had mentioned it to him a number of times in the past. Up until today, she’d only ever talked of it dismissively, rolling her eyes as she’d told him wearily of her father’s obsession with finding her missing sister. However, now she elaborated on what Dale had told her about Adrian’s connection to Mister Snigiss. Frank listened patiently, with Dale interjecting at various points to support her explanation.
After she’d finished, Frank sat there in silence for a bit, mulling over what she’d told him. He fixed her with one of his characteristically sceptical looks.
‘An invisible childhood friend and abductor of children who’s now some underworld player?’
Bailey paused for effect. ‘I have a very strong feeling that Mister Snigiss was behind the car bomb. And if he was, then that means that he’s somehow connected to this sex tape, if we assume that the sex tape was the reason that Adrian and Tiffany were blown up.’
‘You think Mister Snigiss blew them up?’ said Dale with a puzzled frown. ‘How did you come to that conclusion?’
‘When I talked to Dave Boakes, he more or less confirmed that the bomber was wearing a fedora hat.’
‘So?’ said Frank. ‘A hat is a hat. So what?’
Bailey archly raised one eyebrow, reached down into her purse and, with a flourish, pulled out Jennifer’s picture of Mister Snigiss. She pushed it across the table. The two men peered down at it in puzzlement.
‘What’s this?’ said Frank, visibly nonplussed.
‘It’s a picture of Mister Snigiss. Look. See. He’s wearing a fedora hat.’
‘It looks like it’s been drawn by a kid,’ he said.
‘It was. Jennifer drew it.’
Frank looked at the picture in disbelief. ‘Bailey, you cannot expect me to take this seriously. A picture drawn by a… How old was she?’
‘She was eight when she was abducted.’
‘A picture drawn by an eight-year-old kid over twenty years ago.’ He paused to regard her sympathetically. ‘Bailey, I have a five-year-old daughter. Now I love her dearly, but I wouldn’t trust her to come up with an accurate—’
