‘It’s a glorious evening, me beauty,’ Mick Darcy murmured in Molly’s ear.

‘That it is, Mick Darcy,’ she replied in a teasing manner, her black eyes dancing mischievously. She thought of Jack-the-Lad, and of the hastily scribbled note telling her the two of them were never wed. But it was in the past now. ‘I wonder if a certain fella would take a lass for a stroll in the garden?’ she asked. She slipped her small hand into his and smiled up at him.

‘If you mean this certain fella… he would follow the lass concerned to the far corners of the earth.’ He bent his head to kiss the top of her unruly hair. ‘I’d be a proud man to stroll with you in the gardens, sweetheart,’ he said softly, ‘on this night… and on every night for the rest of our lives.’

A moment later, Emma watched Molly and her man go quietly from the room. Her heart was full. The good Lord had answered her prayers.

Now, as Marlow’s arm slid round her shoulders, Emma glanced up at him, at those familiar dark eyes that held a lifetime of love. For the rest of her days she would remember this day above all others.
