  32. About the Author

It was a beautiful spring day in Tennessee. The sun was shining in a cloudless sky. The temperature was in the sixties, and spring flowers were popping up everywhere, especially around the courthouse. The building was old, historical, a little majestic, and somewhat imposing. Functional. To me, it said laws and rules and regulations and the legal system. Not romance.

I glanced across the street where there was a picturesque, old-fashioned church—a white one with a steeple out front. The kind of church that populated postcards and jigsaw puzzles and small-town Tennessee.

That looked like the place to get married.

Though I’d never imagined my wedding day, if I would have… I glanced between the two buildings again. Yeah. The courthouse was not what I would have pictured for the day I got hitched.

As I approached the wide stairs that led to the entrance, I started feeling shaky and anxious. Maybe Cash and Kemp were right. Maybe I was crazy. Maybe this was stupid. Maybe we were about to make a giant mistake.

No.

I let out a gust of a breath, willing it to be less shaky.

I was getting the brewery of my dreams. Chloe was going to get the reins of the company she’d always dreamed of moving up in.

You knew this was a business deal going in and you were fine with it. It makes good sense, I coached myself, beginning to feel a little more leveled out.

I took in a breath of the fresh spring air, catching the sweet scent of the flowers in the front bed that lined the walkway. I needed to stop freaking the fuck out. I would be just fi—

Oh, shit.

The tall, dark wood hundred-year-old front door had opened, and Chloe came out from the courthouse.

I stopped in my tracks and stared up at her.

She wore a white dress that reached to her calves. It had an off-the-shoulders neckline that plunged into a deep vee between her breasts and, between that and the way the waist gathered tightly, it had me noticing her chest like I hadn’t before.

She turned partway, holding the door open for the guy coming out behind her, and don’t think I didn’t notice the way he gave her a head-to-toe gaze and a smile.

When she turned, I got half a glimpse of the interesting cut of the back, which gathered in a point below her shoulder blades and exposed the bottom half of her back. Her beige heeled sandals with straps around her ankles made her legs supermodel long. She’d left her wavy hair down, and the breeze picked up several strands around her face as our eyes met.

I swallowed hard and my mouth went dry.

In all the years I’d known Chloe, I’d never seen her look quite like this.
