Chapters (8)
STERLING: I be looking at the moon. Seem like it’s getting closer and closer. You ever notice that? You look up and see if it ain’t getting closer. Maybe that’s what he meant by a sign. You look next time when the moon be full and see if it ain’t getting closer. You look and then go right back in your house. I don’t go outside when it’s a full moon. There be at least three or four people killed that night. I believe the world coming to an end.
(RISA exits into the back.)
MEMPHIS: If it do be the end of the world, what you gonna do? You can’t do nothing but go down with it. It’s foolish to worry about something like that. Something you ain’t got no control over. If these niggers spent half the time they spend worrying about stuff like that and more time trying to figure out how to get out of the situation they in . . . they wouldn’t have all the problems they got now.
STERLING: Soon as I find Wolf I ain’t gonna have no more problems. Hey, Risa . . . if you see Wolf . . . tell him I’m looking for him. He knows what it’s about. (STERLING exits.)
MEMPHIS (calling): Risa!
RISA: What?
MEMPHIS: Come here, woman. (Pause.) If you want your pay you better get out here.
(RISA enters.)
I owe you forty-six dollars with the ten you took.
RISA: I don’t owe you but seven.
MEMPHIS: You ain’t counting the three dollars you got the other day to buy some hair grease. You ain’t counting that.
RISA: I told you I put the three dollars back cause they ain’t had the kind I wanted.
MEMPHIS: Well, write a note saying you put it back. How in the hell I’m supposed to know you put it back? Here . . . take this forty-nine dollars. I got some business to take care of . . . don’t forget to put the bread in the refrigerator when you lock up. Put the bread in the refrigerator and make sure you pull the shade down on the door. I got to go down to the courthouse in the morning . . . make sure you got enough eggs before you leave out of here. Well, Holloway . . . I was talking to my lawyer . . . Joseph Bartoromo . . . I was talking to him on the phone. He said let him handle it. I ain’t gonna let him handle it but so far. I told him like I tell you . . . I ain’t going for no more draws . . . and I ain’t taking a penny less than twenty-five thousand dollars.
(He starts to exit and stops at the door.)
What’s that address?
HOLLOWAY: Eighteen thirty-nine Wylie. In the back. Knock on the red door.
(The lights go down on the scene.)
