STERLING: I looked at it. He did a good job. Some of the paint done chipped off but you can tell he did a good job. I started to go over there and get his ham for him. But then he wouldn’t have nothing to do in the morning. I didn’t want to take that away from him. He have more cause to get up out of the bed in the morning than I do. I consider him lucky. I get up cause I wake up and can’t think of nothing else to do. Get up and see what’s out here. Only it be the same thing as yesterday. I guess it be that for him, too. Only Lutz just might shock him to death one day and say, “Here, take your ham!” Best thing that might happen to me is I get a woman and an extra twenty dollars from somewhere. The jukebox still broke?
RISA: Yeah. They supposed to fix it. It ain’t gonna do nothing but break again if they do fix it.
STERLING: I don’t know why I want to play it. That’s just like paying a quarter to hear yourself sing. You ought to get a radio or something. That’s free.
HOLLOWAY: Let me get some sugar, Risa.
STERLING: How come you don’t give nobody no sugar? You make them ask for it.
RISA: I give it to them. All they got to do is ask. West ask for sugar and then half the time don’t use it. You watch him. First thing he do is ask for sugar and then it look like he change his mind.
STERLING: West got a sweet tooth. I’m surprised he don’t use it. As much pie as he eat.
(WOLF enters.)
WOLF: How’s everybody in here? Risa, here go some stockings. And put this cologne back over there for Memphis. He like that English Leather cologne.
RISA: What size is they?
WOLF: They your size. I wouldn’t be giving them to you otherwise.
RISA: How much I owe you?
WOLF: You don’t owe me nothing. If I come up with one of them fur coats we can sit down and talk. We can do some real nice negotiating.
RISA: I don’t want no fur coat.
WOLF: You don’t want none till you see it. After you put one of them on and see what it feel like . . . then you want one.
STERLING: Hey, Wolf . . . loan me two dollars. I wanna play a number. Me and Risa got something going. Luck might be trying to get in my door today. I need me some money to buy Risa a present.
WOLF: I ain’t got it, Sterling.
STERLING: I’m gonna hit the numbers and buy Risa a present, then I’m gonna get me one of them Buick Electra deuce and a quarter.
