MEMPHIS: She a mixed-up personality. Anybody can see that. That plain to see. Who want a woman after she done that to herself? I don’t want her. I don’t know what she might do to me.
HOLLOWAY: They had her down there at Western Psych. They couldn’t find nothing wrong with her. They tried every kind of counselor they could think of.
WOLF: She don’t need no counselor. Ain’t nothing wrong with Risa. All she need is a good man. Trust me, I know Risa.
MEMPHIS: You don’t know her like you want to know her. Don’t nobody know her.
WOLF: I know Risa better than people think I do. That’s what I’m trying to say. I know all she need is a man. Somebody to make her feel like a woman. She ain’t had that in six years that I know of. Common sense say after six years she need a man. I see where that Sterling be eyeing her. He be after her. But he don’t know Risa. He don’t know her like I know her. Maybe he a better man than me. I don’t know. But if I had to say, I don’t think so. You want anything, Memphis?
MEMPHIS: Give me a dollar on four twenty-one.
WOLF: Holloway?
HOLLOWAY: I’m gonna wait till I get me a good dream. I can’t dream about nothing.
WOLF: I’ll catch you all later.
(WOLF exits.)
MEMPHIS: Hey, Holloway, you know what I just found out? You know who that boy is . . . that Sterling boy? I was talking to Hendricks. . . . That’s the boy robbed that bank and was out spending the money ten minutes later. You remember that? Hendricks give him a job to help him get out and the boy worked one week and quit. See, Hendricks don’t know . . . he don’t know like I know. He trying to help him, but that boy don’t wanna work.
HOLLOWAY: He say Hendricks laid him off. But I can’t blame him if he did quit. Who wanna haul bricks on a construction site for a dollar and a quarter an hour? That ain’t gonna help him. What’s he gonna do with ten dollars a day?
MEMPHIS: That be ten more than he got now. His grandaddy used to work for three dollars a day. He doing good!
