ANDY: As the victim’s distress increases the tension and fear between the gang members increases.
Simon what you did was reprehensible.
But you were a child.
And you were told to do it.
SIMON: You say.
ANDY: I believe you just followed.
SIMON:—
ANDY: I believe you just followed.
SIMON: But you don’t know.
ANDY: We’ll never know.
SIMON: Unless I do it again.
Or I’ve done it again.
ANDY: You won’t do it again.
Long beat.
SIMON: I just want to be normal.
ANDY: Then just be Simon Fontaine.
SIMON: I don’t know him.
Who is he?
ANDY: I know him.
More than I know anyone else.
I know you completely.
SIMON: Is that allowed?
Beat.
Jessica wanted me to be Santa at her Christmas work party.
I got dressed up in that Santa suit.
ANDY: But you didn’t go through with it.
SIMON: Maybe I did. /
ANDY: You know what’s at stake.
If I breach you. And I could if you’d done that.
You go back to prison.
SIMON: But you wouldn’t breach me?
ANDY: I don’t want to breach you, but I would have no choice.
I would never lie to the Department.
There are rules.
No unsupervised contact with children.
No disclosure of true identity.
No dishonesty with me. /
SIMON goes through the last lines of Andy’s ‘mantra’ while she says it, he knows it so well, has heard it so often.
SIMON: Jess wants a baby.
Beat.
ANDY: You can’t let that happen.
SIMON: Why?
ANDY: We’ve been over this. You would require constant supervision and that would compromise your new identity.
SIMON: But, if Jessica knew why, she would understand.
She wouldn’t tell a soul. I’d only need supervision when she wasn’t there.
ANDY: I believe the stress of it would be counterproductive to your rehabilitation.
SIMON: But you can’t stop me, can you?
ANDY: No.
But I would be expected to write a report about how it would compromise your rehabilitation.
SIMON: I’m not just your experiment.
ANDY: But you know I’m right.
I don’t want you to fail.
SIMON: No babies.
ANDY: No.
SIMON: So let me tell her why.
ANDY: Tell her what?
SIMON: Something real.
I need to be honest with her.
ANDY: We need to keep this secret to protect you
From the media, from the public—
To protect you, and to protect Jessica /—
SIMON: Protect?
ANDY: We’ve constructed this life. We’re in this together. You and me.
Listen to me, otherwise you’re back in prison.
You tell Jessica and you’ve breached your parole.
That’s my rehabilitation theory shot and you in prison.
Beat.
And—
Anyway, she wouldn’t stay.
SIMON: She loves me.
ANDY: [quietly] Simon, you killed a baby.
It doesn’t matter how old you were.
No woman would stay.
JESSICA appears, looking around the squash courts.
