If I don’t give her something

I’ll lose her.

ANDY: Don’t throw your life away.

SIMON: Which life should I not throw away?

ANDY: You’re being provocative.

Beat.

If you value the life you have.

Don’t tell her.

SIMON: She said she fell in love with my fucking name.

ANDY: So?

SIMON: Just let me tell her my first name?

ANDY: Simon no!

Beat.

You know your reintegration depends on you maintaining your new identity.

SIMON: But you get to know it all.

Every tiny detail.

You own more of me than I do.

ANDY: That’s just the consequence of my role.

SIMON: Is it?

Or is it just that you like it like this?

ANDY: Don’t play this game with me.

SIMON: Game!

ANDY: Simon, you have a good government job, a good relationship, a home /—

SIMON: I want her.

ANDY: You have her.

SIMON: I want her to know me.

ANDY: I know you!

SIMON: That doesn’t count.

ANDY: Jessica knows the new you!

SIMON: I need to know if she would still want me, understand me, love me, if she knew everything.

ANDY: She would leave.

SIMON:—

ANDY: I’m warning you.

Don’t step outside the world you’ve created. /

SIMON: You created.

ANDY: No. Simon.

You did this.

You know I want you to succeed.

And that I trust you.

SIMON: You trust me?

ANDY: I do.

SIMON: Then why in all these years nothing?

I know nothing about your life.

ANDY: I trust you Simon.

SIMON: Prove it.

Tell me.

Something.

Anything.

ANDY:—

SIMON: What’s your husband’s name? /

ANDY: We’ve spoken about this, Simon.

SIMON: He talk to you like I do, Andy?

Tell you everything?

ANDY: Don’t. /

SIMON: No I didn’t think so.

So tell me Andy.

What’s his name?

ANDY:—

SIMON: You’re scared I’m going to track him down and shoot him.

Strangle him with my bare arms.

Is that your trust?

ANDY: No.

There have to be boundaries.

Pause.

SIMON: You have kids, don’t you, Andy?

Beat.

ANDY: No.

SIMON: If you did

Would you let me meet them?

Leave me alone with them?

ANDY:—

SIMON: A boy went missing.

ANDY: I know.

Denis Pritchard.

SIMON: A two-year-old.

Vulnerable age.

Age where they’ll just hold your hand and go.

No sense of evil,

Just trusting little souls.

ANDY: It’s unnerving for you.

SIMON: And not for you?

Okay so you don’t have kids

But… if you did would you even tell me?

ANDY:—

SIMON: What if I didn’t think it was working with us any longer?

I’d have to ask for someone else, a new therapist.

Beat.

ANDY: Michael.

SIMON: What?

ANDY: My husband’s name. Michael.

SCENE EIGHT

SIMON arrives home with his squash racquet.

JESSICA sits at the table reading a flyer about the missing boy.

JESSICA: Who won?

SIMON: Me.

JESSICA: [loudly and accusatory] Liar.

SIMON:—?
