“Hey, how come you get a suite?” Andie wondered, eyes narrowing with suspicion. “Did you pick the good room for yourself?”
Kat shook her head. “I had no idea. I checked in like Julia asked and these were the rooms they assigned each of us.” Kat waved her card over the lock. She opened the door and gasped.
“What?” Andie demanded. She craned her neck and looked over Kat’s shoulder. “Oh, wow. Jules, you gotta see this.”
Curiosity already had Julia following her friends inside. Oh, wow, indeed. “Somebody got an upgrade.” Julia whistled. “I see why they call this the Princess Suite.”
“Not fair!” Andie pouted, dropping her bags by the door. She eyed Kat again. “What did you do? Flirt with the desk clerk?”
“I’m flattered you think my flirting abilities could manage this,” Kat snorted. “I told you, I just did what Julia said and checked us in under the reservation number.”
“The hotel had to know that was the TrendList reservation.” Julia leaned her suitcase against a walnut sideboard. She eyed the basket of fruit and wine resting on top. “I bet they think you’re the reporter.”
“Me?” Kat gaped. “Why would they think that?”
“Because you were the one to check us in, genius.” Andie flounced onto the enormous bed. “Have I ever mentioned I’ve always wanted a canopy bed?”
“This is the first I’m hearing of it.” Kat ignored Andie’s not-so-subtle hint and turned to Julia. “This should be your room.”
“No.” Julia waved a hand.
“If she doesn’t want it, I’ll take it,” Andie declared from among a pile of pillows.
“Really,” Kat insisted. “Perk of your new position, right?”
“It’s not mine yet,” Julia reminded her. “This is only a trial run.”
“Even more reason for you to take this room. In case you’re out a job soon.”
“Kat!” Andie chastised, rolling off the bed. She stood and patted Julia on the shoulder. “Don’t listen to her. You’re not going to lose your job.”
“Thanks.”
“Thank me by letting me have this suite.” Andie winked and reached for an apple from the gift basket.
A note card fluttered to the floor and Julia bent to retrieve it. She flicked the card open. “We’re honored you’re here. Hope you’ll tell everyone about your stay!” She sighed. “Yep. This suite is for the ‘Take Me!’ reporter.”
“I bet they put those cards in all the rooms,” Andie said around a mouthful of apple.
Julia held up the card. “Do they also write ‘Can’t wait to read your review!’ on all of them too?”
“Possibly,” Kat mused.
Julia pursed her lips and narrowed her gaze skeptically. “Really?”
“Okay, you’re probably right. But why do you sound upset?” Kat wondered.
