Rose spent a sleepless night going over and over every word Nathaniel had said and by the morning she had come to the conclusion that she would have to leave Sunderland as soon as she could. It would mean saying goodbye to the home she and Davey had shared and all the happy memories it contained, but she told herself she would take Davey with her in her heart. For the life of her she couldn’t see any other way out of this nightmare. She believed Nathaniel when he said he would harm Betsy if she followed through on her plan to take in lodgers. She didn’t care about herself, but from the way he had spoken and even more the look in his eyes she knew he would use Betsy to control her if she didn’t put some distance between them. All her earlier suspicions about Davey’s best friend had been realized, but she had never imagined quite how unbalanced he was. Whether he really believed he was doing what Davey would have wanted in taking her and Betsy on she didn’t know, but in one way it didn’t matter. She had to disappear.
