“Friday is the family dinner. It’ll just be my parents, his parents and sisters and their husbands, and at a restaurant so Jim doesn’t invite half the town again. Then Saturday is the bachelors’ party. His sisters are in charge, so it’s probably going to be crazy. There’s going to be a party bus, and I think we’re going dancing somewhere. Then a bunch of us are going to meet up a couple of times over the weekend at the festival. We decided to skip a rehearsal dinner since we’re having the family thing Friday, so Monday is basically open. We might take some out-of-towners up to Estes, something like that.”
She sighed. “I’ll probably miss some of that, at least. If I get to London tomorrow, I might make it back by Friday. If not, I’ll try to make it back for the bachelors’ party, but I’m not sure, especially with the time difference. I might miss it.”
He pouted before lifting his shoulders, letting it go. “It’s okay. A boss bitch has to be a boss bitch sometimes. And I know you’re married to your work.”
“I’m not—”
He raised his eyebrows, and she had to laugh. After all, they hadn’t broken up per se, but she had broken it off with Maddie because of work. She was married to it in a way.
“Okay. You’re right. And I am sorry. I really wanted to be here for you this week.”
“You are, honey. You did a lot of the work already.”
“But I’ll miss so much of your time off. And I might miss some of the fun stuff.”
“Not your fault.”
“Thanks for understanding. I don’t know why I didn’t tell you this morning.”
“It’s okay. What about dinner later? With me and Jai before you leave?”
“Yes, of course, if there’s time.”
“Do you want me to invite Maddie?”
She froze, eyes wide, and he laughed.
“Oh, man! You should see your face,” he said. “I was fucking with you. Just let me know your flight times. We can always do something fast if we have to.”
“Are you leaving now?”
“Yes, unfortunately. I’m already late for my last meeting. I thought you and Maddie would be back earlier. But after this, I’m free and clear.”
“Oh, okay. So did you drop by to say hi, or did you need something?”
He checked his watch. “Oh, fuck it. What’s five more minutes? I did want to ask your opinion about something.”
“Shoot.”
