“No, nothing like that I’m just… I’m just tired.”

“We’re not going to miss this because you’re tired. I’m going to be Daisy’s godparent.”

I do not miss the fact that I am not going to be the godmother. As if people do not judge our marriage enough, now, we get to give them something else to talk about.

“Daisy,” I quietly say.

“What?” Landon asks.

“I didn’t know her name. Daisy, that’s beautiful.”

Landon gives me a puzzled look. As if he doesn’t know how I did not know her name.

“Let’s just go.”

Annoyed that he ignored my request to stay home, I slowly follow him to the garage. He grabs the keys to his giant Range Rover, and I wonder how I am going to pull myself up into it. I grab the oh shit handle to help pull myself up, but my strength gives way, and I stumble forward bracing myself on the seat. Landon who is already hopped in the front seat reaches out to catch me.

“Brooke! Cac! Are you okay, Beagchaithnini Sneachta.”

Our eyes meet and…hold? His hold a look so intense a shiver runs down my spine. I do not know what to make of his stare. The emotion in them so raw, but I do not know if it is good or bad. We stay like that for seconds, minuets, hours. I do not really know before I manage to choke out a sentence.

“Yeah, I just… My foot slipped,” I say awkwardly.

Landon grabs under my elbows and pulls me up into my seat. After I have straightened up, he lets me go.

“You should be more careful.”

I nod and he starts the engine.

The drive is short and filled with silence. I carefully step out of the vehicle. When I close the door, Landon was standing right behind it as if he were coming over to help me out. A look passes over his face, and I worry about what he sees before he gives his head a slight shake and gestures for me to walk.

“You’re not showing your bump,” he says quietly so only I could hear.

“Yeah, I wasn’t sure if you told any of your friends yet, and this party is about Daisy. I didn’t think it would be an appropriate time to announce it.”

Landon just nods his head, and we go inside.

The party is already in full swing. We are a little late, but not so late it would be considered rude. Landon immediately got called over into a conversation with a group of men. I recognize some of them from past business events, but there is no one I would feel comfortable striking up a conversation with. So I stand awkwardly kind of next to but kind of behind Landon. It seems to be this way at all the functions Landon brought me to, though in the past, those events were always business related. He usually did not bring me to a social call. I only have to participate in the ones that we hosted. We move on to the next group of people, slowly making our way to the hostess. Everyone seems to know Landon, and I know it would be a while before we made it to our destination. I am in for a long night.
