That was for sure. Big strong guy like Perry. Look at him now. The doctor thought he might have meningitis and they’d rushed him to Calgary. But it wasn’t that at all. The poor guy had been having horrible hallucinations about all sorts of weird shit. The shop staff found him screaming out back in the stock room, drooling and pointing at something he thought he saw in the corner by the snowboards. They were doing tests but he still had a fever that was wringing him dry. Of course Pasqual hadn’t even noticed he’d been off sick, even though she must have seen Sally standing in for him in the shop. Eric’s department, personnel. That’s what she always said when things got difficult. At least when there were people to sack or dirty jobs to do. Oh, she liked to hire, but when they were on board they were his lookout.

She snorted, ignoring him. ‘No more, you hear? No more wagon-burners on this resort.’

He played with a pen, watching the TV news switch to something about Europe. ‘Come on. They were only questioning Sam since he was on duty at the time.’

‘Yeah well I think they’re all crazy enough to do anything. Moses said they’re trouble on any resort and I should have listened.’

Moses? The way Pasqual spoke, he suspected she was on pretty chummy terms with their pale employee. Come to think of Mr Moses, where was he? Eric didn’t recall seeing him in the canteen during the staff interrogations. In fact he hadn’t seen him all day.

‘Did the cops speak to Sit-whatshisname?’

She caught an edge in his voice. ‘Sure. Well I’m sure they did. They spoke to everyone.’

Eric knew that was true. He’d gone through the whole staff list personally with that Indian cop, Hawk. Just as well he wasn’t around now, to hear this pillar of Silver society deliver her thoughts on the Native Canadian and his role in the workplace. He’d have liked to see how she’d wriggle out of having her bile overheard by that six-foot-tall crew-cut Mountie. And he seemed a pretty thorough cop.

Hawk had made sure no one was missed out. Not even those that were on vacation. He wondered what Sitconski had to say to them.

Eric didn’t care. He wanted home. He would have to fight a path through the waiting reporters, but that seemed preferable to sitting here listening to Missy Asshole. ‘Look Pasqual, I’m bushed. I’m going home now.’

‘Great. Leave me. I’ll just run this crisis single-handed.’

‘There’s nothing you can do tonight. It’ll be worse tomorrow. You should get some sleep.’
