‘I’m almost positive that most of them are lying,’ Rosalind said. ‘Maybe they weren’t working together, then?’
‘You mean, Clementine could have been trying to stop her cousin from murdering Marcus, and that’s why she killed her?’ Caro was frowning. Something about it didn’t feel right, even if Rosalind couldn’t quite put her finger on what.
‘Perhaps. Or …’ She tried again. ‘What if Libby was there for the same reason we were? Not because she was the murderer—’
‘But because she was trying to catch one! Or at least find out what had happened to Clementine.’ Posy clapped her hand to her notebook. ‘Yes! That makes sense. I mean, if they were family, if Clementine had a family emergency, doesn’t it make sense that she would have spoken to Libby first? But I saw her face when we heard that voicemail from Clementine on Marcus’s phone. She was … shocked.’
‘You think she was investigating what had made Clementine run away?’ Rosalind said. ‘And if she suspected Marcus’s death was murder she might have been scared something had happened to her.’
‘Doesn’t explain why she felt the need to try and knock my brains out,’ Caro said, rubbing the side of her head.
‘Maybe she thought you were Marcus’s murderer, come to hide the evidence you left behind,’ Rosalind suggested, which earned her a deadly stare from Caro.
‘If we hurry up and find her, we can ask her,’ Posy said. ‘What happened next?’
‘Lunch,’ Caro said, promptly. ‘I don’t remember seeing Clementine at that, but Libby was there, wasn’t she?’
Posy nodded. ‘She spilled her coffee then disappeared. I thought she was getting changed – but she still had coffee stains on her skirt at the panel later that afternoon.’ She paged through her notebook, muttering something under her breath about an app with tags. ‘Ashok spoke to Clementine around then, he said. About Marcus. She must have been on her way down to the stables for the murder mystery.’
‘Then that’s where we go next.’
They headed down the path that led around the West Lawn, towards the stables.
‘Kit said he saw Libby asking Clementine for her phone back outside the stables,’ Posy said, as they walked.
‘Kit also said he saw a bear stealing jam,’ Caro pointed out.
‘Yeah, but I think the phone thing was more likely.’ Posy had a small half-smile on her face that made Rosalind wonder what she thought of her new co-star. ‘Especially since Heather and Harry also told us they saw Clementine talking to another woman at the same time when Kit and I saw them in the Murder Spiral.’
‘So she talked with Ashok and Libby – and dozens of wannabe detectives taking part in the murder mystery,’ Caro said.
‘And she was there when we went down to the folly, but not when we came back,’ Rosalind added.
