‘Why didn’t you tell us you’d found this when we searched his room?’ Posy asked, her forehead creased with confusion as she looked down at the little book in Caro’s hands.

Caro ducked her head a little. ‘Well, we were focused on the blackmail letters.’

‘No, that’s not it.’ Rosalind looked at her thoughtfully. ‘Did you think it might implicate you?’

Caro winced. ‘Not exactly. It’s just … I’ve known Marcus a long time. And, well, he had things he could hold over me – you know that from the blackmail notes. I thought they were from him for a good reason. And I needed to know what was in his ledger before I shared it, that’s all.’

‘And what was in it?’ Posy asked.

‘A record of all the Golden Age of Crime memorabilia he has bought and sold over the years. And some that he didn’t buy, too.’

‘You mean stole.’ Posy’s expression was stony, and Caro remembered, too late, that Posy had been stolen from by people she trusted before. ‘Did you steal for him? Is that why you didn’t want to tell us?’

‘No! Well, not recently.’ Rosalind’s eyebrows went, and Caro sighed. ‘It was right after my divorce, when I was still working on the TV show. Marcus appeared in a few episodes as a recurring character, and we got to talking. We’d go to the pub together after filming finished for the day, drink too much and …’

‘Wake up together?’ Rosalind guessed.

‘Once or twice.’ Caro sighed. ‘It was mistake. I knew it was a mistake at the time, but I didn’t know how much. Because then he asked me to “borrow” a few items from the set for him, once his role was finished. Little things to start with, things that no one would miss, but that he could sell on.’

‘And it was put down to extras taking mementos,’ Rosalind said, echoing Caro’s words from the day before.

‘Exactly. Until he wanted me to take something bigger, and I said no.’

Posy scowled. ‘Let me guess. He blackmailed you?’

‘No,’ Caro said, slowly. ‘He didn’t. He could have, for certain. But he didn’t.’

‘Why?’ Rosalind asked.
