Then she reached under the drawers and felt the soft leather of Marcus’s ledger. Small, square, stained and aged – much like its late owner. It was a simple thing to crouch down and prise it free, tucking it in the inside pocket of her jacket. Caro had an idea what she’d find in there, but she wanted to check it and be sure before she shared it with the others.

She hadn’t expected Marcus to still have photographic evidence of their idiotic affair. Who knew what other evidence he was carrying around with him?

She double checked in case he’d hidden anything else there, and felt another piece of paper. Frowning, she tugged that free too, and brought it into the light.

It was a letter; creamy paper in a matching quality envelope, addressed to Anton.

Caro scanned the text as she stood up.

‘What is it?’ Posy asked. ‘What have you found?’

‘It seems that Marcus had been branching out,’ Caro said, drily, as she held it up. She hadn’t known about this part of his enterprise, but she wasn’t surprised by it either. ‘He didn’t send his blackmail notes on script pages.’

‘More blackmail?’ Posy’s eyebrows rose by degrees as she read the letter. ‘But who was he blackmailing?’

Caro held up the envelope. ‘Your boss. Was he really responsible for leaking the original script?’

Posy winced. ‘And a few other things. What did Marcus want?’

‘The usual. Money, plus a cameo in the new movie. Otherwise he was going to the investors with proof that Anton was behind the leak.’ She checked under the desk again. ‘Although, whatever proof he thought he had, he didn’t have it here.’

‘Anton is not having a very good weekend,’ Posy said, a wide smile lighting up her face.

‘This is what you were arguing with him about last night, isn’t it?’ Caro snorted a laugh. ‘Artistic differences, indeed.’

Posy pulled a face, but admitted it all the same. ‘He’s responsible for all the talk of the curse.’ She explained the row she’d had with the director the night before, and Caro grinned at the idea of Posy duping Anton by pretending to record his confession. She was turning out to be more of a Dahlia than Caro had expected.

She glanced at Rosalind to share the moment. But Rosalind was staring at the envelope in Caro’s hand.

‘No stamp,’ she muttered. ‘That’s what was strange about it.’

Caro exchanged a look with Posy. Clearly they were missing something, but Rosalind was a consummate actress. She’d want to let the suspense build before she told them, and there was no point trying to rush her.
