Time for Caro to take over again. ‘And that was when Isobel announced that the magnifying glass had been stolen. So we know it must have been taken between eleven, when we left Lettice’s study, and five when Isobel made that announcement. Agreed?’
Everyone on the stage nodded, along with a lot of the crowd. Caro cast an assessing eye over the audience. A few people at the back were sneaking out again – this wasn’t what they’d come for, after all. But the majority had stayed and looked engaged in the process.
‘Of course, after that, whoever took it would have to hide it – since all our bags were searched – then retrieve it, too.’ Rosalind had claimed the microphone from Posy. ‘So we need to carry on into the evening. There was free time until the pre-dinner drinks, then dinner itself.’
Caro watched the suspects carefully at the mention of dinner. Every one of them glanced at their neighbours, reflecting on what had happened as that dinner, and the day, had come to an end.
‘So now we get to the fun bit,’ Posy said, into Rosalind’s microphone. ‘What you all noticed about the day.’
Posy nodded at the second microphone in Caro’s hand, and she passed it to Felicity to start.
‘Um, well, I think it basically went pretty much as you said.’ She flicked her blue hair over her shoulder as she studied the flipchart. ‘I was with Ashok when we did the murder mystery thing after lunch – Posy, you saw us together in the Murder Spiral, so you can be our alibi for that?’
‘I sure can.’ Posy’s bouncy smile made Caro think of children’s TV presenters. And not in a good way.
‘Then after that we tracked down another couple of clues together, before splitting up for the last part – to see which one of us could win.’ She gave Ashok a baleful look. ‘I got caught up in an argument with a group of day delegates about how Dahlia solved the mystery in Flowers and Feuds without ever leaving the undertaker’s parlour, so Ashok beat me.’
One of Lettice’s sixties efforts that, although still set in the thirties. Not one of Caro’s favourites to film, as she had to sit around with a fake corpse all day. But the ending was clever, she had to admit that.
‘Then after that was over, and we knew the magnifying glass had been stolen, I was reading in my room.’ Her cheeks took on a slight pink tinge. ‘I know we’re supposed to be having an immersive experience, no modern electronics and all that, but I smuggled my kindle in, you see, and I have all the Dahlia Lively books on it, as well as the hardbacks at home.’
‘You wanted to check you were right about the ending of Flowers and Feuds,’ Caro guessed. ‘I can understand that.’
