Emma Ford had stayed in the hospital for a total of three weeks. Austin had picked out his sister’s name and we had adopted her. I’d never thought I’d be a dad, but life had other plans for us.
Having Emma with us had been a massive change, but we’d rolled with the punches. All of this had come out of the blue, but now, we were a family. I loved that little girl more than I loved myself and as much as I loved Austin.
We’d been blessed. Emma was perfectly healthy. In fact, her teacher had told us that she was the sharpest and smartest little girl in her class. Next year, when she started kindergarten, she was going to have her IQ tested and probably be placed into advanced classes when she started first grade. Even if Emma had been sick or learning disabled, we would’ve loved her just the same…
From the patio, we watched as our daughter sang loudly as Woaweesa pushed her on the swing set. Sitting on my lap in an outdoor chair, Austin had his arms wrapped around my shoulders and he kissed me.
As always, his kiss got me riled up. I lifted the boy to his feet and stood. “Where are you going?” he asked.
“We’re going to slip inside for five minutes, lock the door to the bedroom, and I’m gonna try to put a baby into you,” I whispered, taking his hand into mine.
“But we’ve been trying for years and you haven’t gotten me knocked up yet.” Austin winked.
“Well, maybe that’s good Lord’s way of telling us that we need to keep trying.” I pulled him into the house after me. “Come on, babe. You know what your husband needs and you’re the only one who can give it to me.”
“And don’t you ever forget it, Sir,” Austin replied, smirking.
