  11. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I did not know how long I should wait. Should I call her immediately? Should I tell her that I was free to have supper with her and Donald any time? Also, I did not know what to say to Jorge or his father. I knew that they would telephone and I was unsure how the previous evening had gone. I decided it would be better if I rang them first. I went to the phone and dialed Jorge’s number. His father answered. He seemed curt and tired, as though barely interested in what had happened. I was glad that I had telephoned him rather than waiting for him to contact me. I told him I had arranged a further meeting with the Americans later in the week. He asked me if I had put our case to them. I answered that I had done so, and they were interested, but it was hard to be sure, and I would let him know. He said nothing for a while and then grunted a valediction and put down the phone.
