Hannah eyes softened with regret. Vicki was in a good mood, which was rare these days.

Hannah rubbed the back of her neck as she considered for a moment that she was, if anything, jealous that she hadn’t found her own partner at the wedding, aside from Dawn, who was more of a taskmaster than an actual friend.

Rob certainly hadn’t made good on his promise to be Hannah’s security blanket during the weekend. Not only had he been a no-show, he was now rushing her off the phone.

Hannah glanced over at Bee’s uncle and gave him a closer look. In his tailored brown suit, with his wavy salt-and-pepper hair, he could be a celebrity. He was fit and had a strong chin. He had good posture. He wasn’t quite George Clooney. But Treat Williams?

“You’re casting him. Stop it,” Vicki said, recognizing Hannah’s focused eyes.

“Fine.”

“Well,” Vicki said, giving up a small smile, “at least tell me who you picked.”

“Treat Williams.”

“Who is Treat Williams?”

“He was the dad on Everwood. And he was in the movie adaptation of Hair.”

“No way,” Vicki said, leaning into Hannah so Joe remained out of earshot. “That’s not good enough. At least give me Robert Downey Jr.”

“No way,” Hannah mimicked back. “That’s too good. Wishful thinking. Your guy’s too old.”

“He’s in his forties!” Vicki snapped too loud, prompting both women to look down and suppress laughter. Joe flashed Vicki a questioning look, his cheeks flushed.

Hannah shot him a sheepish smile in return. He tentatively grinned back in her direction, took a sip from one of the wineglasses, and looked away.

“How about Scott Bakula?” Hannah asked, thoughtfully.

“I don’t know who he is either.”

“You know, from Quantum Leap.”

Vicki’s eyes narrowed. “What’s Quantum Leap?”

Hannah put her hand to her forehead. “Are you kidding me? How do you not know what Quantum Leap is? How are we even friends?”

Vicki rolled her eyes. “Not everybody watches movies and television for a living, Hannah. Some of us have grown-up jobs.”

“So,” Hannah said, ignoring the jab from her monumentally depressed friend who, at the moment, appeared to be almost giddy. “If it’s not ‘like that,’ as you put it, then what is it like? Because I’m pretty sure that Uncle Joe wants to make out with you. And if I were you, I’d go for it. Maybe he can work his way to Robert Downey Jr. status by the end of the night. He’s on the right track with that suit.”

Vicki’s eyes narrowed. “Can you not make this creepy?”

“I didn’t say it was creepy,” Hannah said, her voice dripping with implication. “I just said that there’s an attractive older man who wants to see you naked. It’s only creepy if you think it’s creepy.”

“No, Hannah, I mean, it’s not like that. He’s just a nice guy. He has a daughter. A teenage daughter. He loves her. And he adores Bee. He works in the restaurant industry, so he understands what I do for a living. He’s cool.”
