Bee and Joe were silent as they walked back across the lawn in the direction of the tent. Joe was a few feet ahead of her with Hannah’s bags in his trembling hands. “I’m sorry,” Bee yelled from behind him. She sprinted a few feet forward and grabbed the back of his jacket to slow him down. “Joe?” Bee asked, finding his eyes.

“Yeah?” he responded, looking back at her, trying to smile.

She put her hands over her red face.

“Don’t mess up your makeup,” Joe said, pulling her fingers from her eyes.

“It’s okay,” he continued without waiting for her response.

Bee gave him the shamed look he remembered from her childhood. It was the same face she made as an eight-year-old when she finished multiple candy bars in less than a minute under his watch during his Maryland stays.

“Really,” Joe said, softening. “There’s no need to apologize.”

“I’ve seen people have sex before,” he continued. “I live in Las Vegas. No one’s going to know about it but us. Now let’s go find Hannah so I can get her to the hotel before she vomits all over your reception.”

Bee laughed as Joe circled behind her, taking both of Hannah’s bags in one hand so he could place the other on Bee’s back for support. They found Hannah where they’d left her, with Dawn, who was now clapping her hands in front of Hannah’s face to keep her awake. “This is unacceptable,” Dawn told her in a sharp tone. “Tom can see you. You need to rally.”

“I don’t care,” Hannah responded, slurring her words, her eyes closed. “I just want to go to bed.”

“Dawn, she’s half-asleep,” Bee sighed. “Let’s just get her out of here.”

Dawn used her thumbs to open Hannah’s eyelids manually. The bridesmaid groaned. “For the love of God,” Dawn said, letting the lids close again. “I gave her an Adderall. How can she be asleep?”

Joe shot Dawn a look of disbelief and pulled her hands away from Hannah’s face.

“What possessed you to give her an amphetamine?”

“I gave her Xanax to even it out,” Dawn said.

Joe looked down at Hannah, whose head rolled back on her neck.

“Well, if you want her, she’s all yours,” Dawn responded sharply to Joe, just before walking back to the dance floor. Hannah opened her eyes just long enough to see who the new voices belonged to. “Joe’s going to take you back to the hotel,” Bee said, yelling each word as if Hannah was hard of hearing. Hannah reached out for Joe like a child, allowing him to take both of her hands in his. “I need my purse,” she murmured.

“Got it,” Joe said, nodding toward Hannah’s leather bag and small suitcase, which hung over his shoulder.

“Do you need help walking her out?” Bee asked Joe.

“I’m fine, Bee,” he said. “Go back to Matt and enjoy your night. You’ve got a few more songs left.”
