- THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING
‘The Princeps? Well, that’s no surprise. I used to run into their son at training camps. He was always … odd. Standoffish.’
‘Kaian was nice enough. But his parents … They put me entirely on edge. I felt like they could see right through me.’
‘Well, I suppose that had to be expected, right?’
‘Why would I expect that?’
Evera suddenly looked unsure of herself. ‘Well, before your arrival, there was a big debate. With the king and queen having no children, many wondered who would take the crown. The Princeps believed they were the right choice, pushing for Kaian to be next in line.’
‘How do you know that?’
‘Gossip will do as gossip will do. The Princeps’ eagerness was always a topic of conversation.’ Evera shrugged. ‘But now that you’re here, I guess there’s no question any more. So I’m sure the Princeps are angry.’
Sapphire chewed on her lip while she processed Evera’s words. On the one hand, they explained the Princeps’ behaviour, but on the other hand, she had never really thought about her next step. Never considered the expectations that came with her title.
Would Kaian Princeps do a better job? Kaian with his goofy grin and quick wit.
Araxia seemed to believe in her, at least.
The hour that followed was filled with whispered secrets and loud laughter and Sapphire, to her surprise, let herself relax – feeling like she belonged. But soon enough, Claye’s knock resounded through the small house, alerting them that it was time for Sapphire to go.
After quick goodbyes, Sapphire headed for the carriage where Claye awaited her. But then she heard Evera’s panicked voice.
‘Sapphire! You almost forgot your book.’
She turned around, confused, just as Evera shoved a worn book into her hands without a word of explanation. Sapphire blinked a few times before nodding.
‘Thank you. I’ll see you soon.’
After an awkward hug, Sapphire turned to find Claye wearing a suspicious expression.
‘You didn’t bring a book with you.’
‘Evera and I have a book exchange.’
He studied the object in her hands, and she tucked it behind her back.
‘Are we ready to travel home?’
‘We are ready.’
With assistance, she settled back in the carriage, and Claye took the other side, his eyes closing as soon as the carriage began to move. She watched him closely. His breathing was steady and slow. But only when she was sure he was asleep did she pull the book out from behind her.
She ran her finger down the cracked spine. There was nothing notable about it, no inscription or title. Nothing that indicated what might be inside.
