- THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING
‘We are so proud to be a part of your future, princess. We hope you know we are always here for assistance, guidance, or support. Whatever you may need, you must simply ask.’
Sapphire felt herself offer the first untrained smile of the day. The two women brought her a sense of comfort that was hard to come by in Eriobis.
‘Your support is appreciated. I would love you to show me Astral through your eyes. Perhaps we can schedule a tour together.’
The women bowed their heads, speaking hushed words of excitement. Kip offered her a small nod as the two women moved back to their seats.
Next came a man and a woman whose eyes were as red as Evera’s and Lelani’s. Their faces were cautious as they approached, eyeing her closely.
‘Princess, an honour it is.’ The woman spoke. ‘I am Yila, and this is my husband, Abe. We are the governors of Aleburn.’
Sapphire reached out for Yila’s hand, and the woman’s eyes widened at her touch.
‘Your beautiful territory is where I found myself when I first arrived. Aleburn will always have a place in my heart.’
The couple softened, Yila squeezing her hand gently.
‘Whatever you need, princess. Any support we can offer – we are willing and ready.’
Sapphire gave them a close-lipped smile, the silence signalling it was time to move forward.
The next person stepped up alone. Her eyes were grey, almost milky in colour, hands frail, and skin seemingly stretched too thin. She wore a chain around her neck signifying her important status to those around her. A Prodigal – the highest level of enlightenment one could reach in the temple.
‘Princess, I am one of the many Prodigals of this land. I have spent many years praying to the Elders for your return, and to see you here now is the honour of a lifetime. The power of the Elders in the flesh.’
Sapphire straightened a bit more, looking down at the small woman. There was something about the Prodigal that made Sapphire feel on edge. Her skin prickled under her dress and she shivered. The woman reached for her hand, and she begrudgingly accepted the grip.
At the contact, Sapphire clenched her teeth. The scar on her palm screamed in protest. The Prodigal’s grip tightened, eyes locked on Sapphire’s.
‘Have you been saying your prayers?’
‘Of course. Daily,’ she lied.
‘I insist you continue. It is of the utmost importance that you protect your mind from the evil that lurks in this world.’
Araxia stepped towards them, and gripped the woman’s wrist gently but sternly.
‘Thank you for your guidance. Do find your way to your seat as lunch will begin soon.’
The woman released Sapphire’s hand immediately. The Prodigal’s vision seemingly cleared as she blinked a few times.
‘All blessings to you, princess.’
