  47. THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING

Evera squeezed her hand gently and Sapphire tried to relax. They were heading out to visit the territories impacted by the storm, and Kip and Araxia had not argued when Sapphire had demanded that Evera join them in hopes to quell the tension.

‘What does our visit solve for these people?’ Sapphire said as she looked out of the window. ‘Us laden in jewels and tailored dresses and robes as they mourn their homes and all that was lost.’

‘It is a reminder that we support them,’ said Kaian ‘That they are not alone in these times. Since the … announcement of our betrothal, we will be expected to do these types of things, together.’

Bile rose in Sapphire’s throat and she struggled to hold her tongue as he continued.

‘Smile, bless the people, keep a level head. Remind them of the Elders’ plan – how the Harvest Storm always seeds news gifts for the future.’

‘Do you think that’s true?’

Kaian shot her a wary look as the carriage arrived.

‘Do you truly think the Elders took two lives as the price for prosperity?’ Sapphire’s voice had an edge of venom.

‘I believe that the Elders always have a plan, and I will continue to trust that they do. As should our people.’

‘You’re a bigger fool than I ever took you for,’ Sapphire spat. ‘And stop calling them that.’

‘Calling them what?’

‘Our people. You don’t sit on the throne, Kaian. Not yet, at least.’

He opened his mouth to say something but instead, she gathered her dress in her hands as she stepped towards the door. She smiled slightly when she found Claye waiting for her, hand extended like he had expected nothing less than this poor behaviour. She threw a scathing look over her shoulder. ‘Besides, if I had just lost someone, I wouldn’t want to hear that it was all for some bigger plan.’

Kaian paled as silence filled the carriage save for a rustling sound as Evera bounced her leg, from either nerves or discomfort. Sapphire cut her eyes to her friend, and Evera gave a smile that looked a bit more like a grimace.

The first location they visited was Aleburn. Sapphire sat with Yila, the woman who had been kind at her presentation lunch, as she poured her heart out. Cliffs had crumbled, homes had been destroyed, crops were no longer viable. Sapphire held the woman’s hand tightly, looking to Claye to ensure he was taking note of everything Yila said. Aleburn had a special place in Sapphire’s heart, and she wasn’t lying as she promised to use whatever power she held to send aid.

Next was the Isle of Irobel. Sapphire had only been there once but knew the journey was long. She shifted in her seat knowing she would never be able to hide her resentment for the entirety of the ride.

‘Do you have nothing to say to me?’
