  47. THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING

‘Majesty, would you mind if the children went and occupied themselves? We have a few things we need to discuss – in private.’

Sapphire didn’t argue as Araxia gave her a knowing look. Instead, she stood, excusing herself with Kaian in tow. They went through the double doors that led to the wetland gardens and walked in silence. As she took him in, she noticed he was limping. But that wasn’t all – there were bruises on his skin. Noticeable bruises that had not come by accident.

‘You’re hurt.’

He gave her a gentle smile.

‘After the duel … It’s nothing I’m not used to.’

Sapphire felt ill as she realized what the boy was implying. An unfamiliar sadness rushed through her as she wondered if Kaian could ever truly reach the standards his parents expected.

‘Come. Let’s walk through the gardens.’

He nodded, keeping pace next to her. His face twisted as he struggled to match her stride, so she slowed.

‘I’m sorry about the duel. I’m not exactly sure what came over me.’

‘I already told you it was fine. It was a competition, and you had a lot more at stake. I understand.’

She gave him a grateful nod. ‘Do you know what they’re talking about?’

‘Shadow Witches, if I had to guess. They’ve been occupying the forest in Ciliria for some time. Father is displeased.’

‘Shadow Witches?’

She feigned ignorance – hoping Kaian would reveal something she didn’t know.

‘I’m surprised your parents haven’t warned you of them.’

‘I’m still going through my history courses.’ Another lie. But one she could afford.

‘Those courses teach you nothing anyway. Shadow Witches were the root cause of the First War. And despite the advice of the whole royal council, three hundred years ago, the ruling queen decided to draw up a treaty with their remaining lineage. Their magic was somehow passed down and unrest grew as those of the coven bloodline yearned to practise the magic they knew.’

‘But why would the rulers allow that?’

‘Goodwill? Proof that the war was truly over? A token of good faith in the hope that the Shadow Witches took it and kept the peace? There have been plenty of explanations, but no one can really be sure.’

Sapphire chewed on her bottom lip, lost in thought. ‘What makes them so awful?’

‘Their shadows are beasts of their own creation that could tear the flesh from your bones, flaying you alive before you even realize you’re dead. Their magic is dark, Sapphire. There’s a reason why the Elders risked so much to seal them behind the barrier. They are just a venomous infestation that should have been taken care of ages ago.’ He pointed to the large windows of the dining room where his father paced, his hands thrown in the air.

Sapphire shivered, the memory of Ashes’ shadows brushing against her skin still clear in her mind.
