Zach runs his hand through his hair, quickly averting his gaze. “He picked me. Wants me to prove my loyalty or some shit. Loyalty to him or the family or the company. Sometimes I don’t know the difference.”
“What if there isn’t a difference? What if being an Elysian means unwavering loyalty to the Registration? No matter what?”
Zach stares at her.
“What if I prove to your father that I’m loyal to him and the Registration? That I’m not a threat? Would he let me live?” Lynell asks.
Zach shrugs. “Maybe. But I doubt it.”
Lynell nods. “Well, in that case, if someone has to do it, I’d rather it be you.” She forces a smile. Then, with an idea forming, she perks up. “If I’m Eli’s daughter, then I’m an Elysian. I can’t be Registered.”
“I wish that were the case,” Zach says with a sigh. “But you weren’t, uh, claimed by him at birth. You’re in the system as Elizabeth’s daughter. Our grandfather kept himself, his wife, Eli, and Eric off the Registration when he created it. Then Dad did the same when I was born. But the real protection is our status. Regulators and government officers know us and protect us. Nobody will touch us.”
A sour taste fills Lynell’s mouth at the unjust privilege, but also at the sick desire to have it. The protection of status, wealth, power, and a name.
“Okay,” she says, clearing her throat. “I don’t think I can give him the code.”
“Ah, but you will.”
Lynell and Zach both jump at the words and turn to face Eric Elysian. Eric stands in the doorway with two guards behind him. He looks between his son and his niece. His clothes are much calmer than yesterday. A light black suit with no tie. His hair is undone, showing off loose curls.
“Lynell, I’m not evil,” Eric says, walking into the room, his hands behind his back. “You’re an Elysian. You’re my niece and I care about you.”
Lynell scoffs.
“Be a part of this family. Share in its privilege. Its wealth. You can. All you need to do is share the letter with me, and together we will make this world a better place.” He’s smiling, and for a moment, Lynell thinks he’s being sincere. “Or deny us. Deny your blood right and your name. Become my problem and live in fear. It’s up to you, Lynell. Just know that I am very good at solving problems.”
Lynell feels Zach step closer to her, between her and his father. Some tension slips from her muscles.
Eric places his hand on Zach’s shoulder, yet his eyes remain trained on Lynell. “I’m not threatening you, Lynell. I’m offering you a choice.” He turns and heads to the door, pulling Zach with him. “I suggest you make the right one.”

The door to her room is unlocked, but there are two guards stationed outside and Lynell stays in the bedroom, pacing.
