‘I think that’s a wonderful idea, Hazel, and just the thing we want to encourage. Not the drunkenness but the other bit,’ she clarified. ‘Okay, I’m going to get started on the grotto. I’ve got so much to do. Nina and Hazel, you’re on the information point, aren’t you? And, Mr Whittaker, you’re on the gift shop, I think. We can all swap around through the day, and make sure you come in here to warm up if you need to. I’m sure someone will cover you if you need a break.’ Bella picked up her cup and headed off. ‘Have a lovely day, everyone.’

Outside, Bella approached what would by the end of the day be Santa’s grotto with mounting excitement. By the time she’d finished, it would be transformed from little more than a plain wooden shed to the epitome of Christmas cheer and fireside cosiness. Unlocking the padlock that swung on the front, she stepped inside. A hook hung from the ceiling for the light that would be powered by a small generator but that wasn’t in place yet, so she hung the lantern she’d brought with her.

Her first job was to hang some garlands around the ceiling. She’d also bought a fake cardboard fireplace, which would sit on one wall and opposite it would be Santa’s huge wingback chair and some little stools for the children. She could already picture a Christmas tree in one corner surrounded by presents. Fake ones, of course. The real ones would be in a sack next to Santa. That was another job on her list. This week she had to wrap all the colouring books and sets of colouring pencils ready to give out. If there was that to do as well – a job she’d all but forgotten about among her excitement for the giving tree and her life falling apart – there wasn’t time to waste.

The decorations they’d purchased were stored in a box in the back corner and Bella set to work hanging a fake ivy and berry garland from each corner of the wooden chalet so it looped gently around the room. Standing back and surveying her efforts, she was aware of the park coming to life. Children now played in the playground and couples ambled along the paths enjoying the countryside. Villagers waved at her and she waved back, sharing morning greetings, and all around, winter heather bloomed from the flowerbeds in deep purples and pinks, adding splashes of colour.
