- About the Author
- By Lin Anderson
Josh’s expression as he dismounted suggested something had happened that Greg needed to be told about, and in person.
‘Josh,’ Greg said. ‘D’you want to come inside?’
‘Is Joanne in there?’
‘She is.’
‘Then I think we should maybe talk in the shed?’
Puzzled now, and a little troubled, Greg nodded an okay and led Josh inside the shed, shutting the door behind them.
‘The police have lifted Finn again. Caroline’s going mad with worry.’
‘Do we know why they’ve rearrested him?’
‘I tried Harry, but he’s not saying anything except they must have more evidence against him.’
Greg racked his brain for what that might be, but since they didn’t truly know for sure what they’d had the first time round . . .
‘There’s no way Finn killed Ailsa,’ Josh said. ‘He can’t kill anything. He won’t come hunting with us. Not rabbits, deer. He won’t even go fishing.’
Greg knew all this already, which was why he’d been so surprised by Joanne’s story of Finn’s fury the night he’d found her with Caroline.
‘That time he was angry with you at the hall – what was that all about?’ Greg said.
‘He blamed me for causing all the horror by wrecking the hot tub. He was right about that.’ Josh looked to Greg. ‘I’m going to tell the police he was with us that night. So, if there is a fingerprint, then that’s the reason it’s there. I want you to back me up.’
‘What?’ Greg said stupidly.
‘You were there that night. I saw you as we ran off. I thought maybe I was mistaken when you didn’t give us up to the police. You heard the voices. You knew everyone who was there.’
‘And Finn wasn’t one of them,’ Greg heard himself say.
Josh didn’t like that response.
‘You knew we found something,’ he said firmly. ‘You must have checked on what it was after we left. Or maybe you already knew what it was? Either way, you didn’t report it. You left it for Colin to find and report the next morning. I bet you didn’t tell Colin you’d been there or what you’d seen either.’
Lies always return to haunt you. Lies and omissions.
‘I was there and I did look. I was as shocked to see her body as you were.’ That much at least was true.
‘And?’ Josh prodded.
‘I suspected I was the last person to see Ailsa alive. So for me to report the body . . .’ He trailed off. It wasn’t the whole story, but it was true enough.
‘So you didn’t give me up, and I did the same for you. Now we both have to help Finn,’ Josh said in a determined fashion.
