But once she heard about these parties, she was intent.
She would get intent on something, you know?
She needed money.
And they were going to pay her five thousand dollars to go to a party. She knew the deal. That sex tape was her resume, you know? She made me give them the tape.
She knew what she was getting into.
DANIELSON: What happened?
KHADIM: (becoming more upset) I wasn’t there, I told you . . .
I don’t get invited to those parties.
She went to it. It went all night long.
DANIELSON: What did they do to her?
KHADIM: I don’t know. I don’t know what happened.
She called me at like five in the morning. She was . . . She wanted me to come pick her up, and I went out to get her. She told me some corner that wasn’t anywhere near the party. I don’t know how she got there, I don’t know what happened to her. And I kept having to call her back ’cause I couldn’t find her. She’d say she was some place and then she wouldn’t be there. She’d say she was some other place, she wouldn’t be there. And I was just driving around in circles.
And then finally she was there. On some corner, in her little dress and no shoes and her feet were all dirty.
She just got in and didn’t say anything the whole way home.
I couldn’t even look at her.
I wanted to tell her . . .
I wanted to say to her . . .
(beat) I pulled up to her dad’s house. Her dad’s shit-ass fucking piece-of-shit house and she got out.
Beat.
KHADIM: She said she got double the money because of her face.
Khadim looks at the flute on the desk.
KHADIM: Then I bought her that stupid flute.
I told her I bought it and she was like, how can I play the flute with my mouth like this?
I told her it would heal.
I was supposed to meet her at our spot, in the park, by the cliff. And I got there late. I was late. And she wasn’t there, and I waited and waited and I started calling her.
He takes her cell phone from Danielson and opens it. Stares at it.
KHADIM: I called her and I called her and I . . .
I still do.
In the middle of the night or . . .
In the middle of the day. I call her. I call her.
Her voice still answers.
A very long silence. Neither man knows what to do or say.
The argument, the fight, seems to be a dream they are both waking from.
KHADIM: (quietly) I have to go.
But Khadim makes no move to leave. He probably doesn’t even know why he said that.
Another long awkward silence.
DANIELSON: What are you doing for spring break?
The ridiculousness of the question hangs in the air.
