While Jackman wandered through the graveyard, two other men were abroad that rainy night. They paid no attention to the weather, and neither were in their right mind. Both were dangerous. One doggedly pursued his aim, while the other never operated without a contingency plan. This latter man consigned tonight’s expedition to one of simple reconnaissance, smiled coldly and went home.

Marie had just poured herself a glass of wine and was contemplating supper, when her phone rang. Jackman.
‘Boss! What news?’
‘It’s him, it’s Jordan Spiller. Hetty and Len have identified him. We start in earnest tomorrow.’
There was something not quite right in the way Jackman said this. ‘You sound a bit down, Jackman. You’ve got the result you wanted, so what’s up?’
Jackman gave a little laugh. ‘It’s nothing, I’m sure, but the picture Hetty painted of him doesn’t quite match up to the image I had in my head. I’m afraid we might find that his motives are deeper and more convoluted than we first believed.’
‘As if our cases are ever straightforward!’ she said. ‘So, do you want to expand on that or hit me with it tomorrow?’
‘It’ll wait, Marie. I’ll let you switch off for the evening. We’ll tackle it after a night’s sleep. And I need a hot shower. I’ve been standing in the local churchyard reading tombstones in the pouring rain.’
‘Er, right, Jackman. New hobby of yours, is it? See you in the morning.’
As soon as Marie ended the call, her phone rang again. What had Jackman forgotten now? But it wasn’t Jackman. ‘Have you eaten yet?’
‘Ralph! Well, not exactly, I’m just weighing up my options — bother to cook or microwave?’
‘Do neither. I’ve had to collect some statements from an address close to your place. Suppose I grab two fish and chip suppers and bring them over?’
‘Perfect! Make mine a large haddock, and don’t forget the mushy peas and scraps. Oh. But you’re a vegetarian. What are you going to eat?’
She heard him laugh. ‘I’m what’s known as a pescatarian. I do eat fish, although not often. I should be with you in around twenty minutes, give or take.’
Marie found herself smiling from ear to ear. Three meals together in one week! Then she realised what she must look like.
‘Hellfire! Twenty minutes! I need at least an hour.’ Marie took a quick shower and racked her brains for something to wear. After a few moments of panic, she settled for a pale blue-and-white-striped shirt. She brushed her hair, telling herself that she was acting like a teenager.
She’d just got herself ready when Ralph arrived. They ate at the kitchen table. Ralph had a knack for making her feel totally at ease, and she began to enjoy herself.
