Kayla introduced her brother and smiled as everyone shook hands. Joey smiled, showing magnificent white teeth. Sam thought he had the shrewdest eyes she’d ever seen. He looked down at his watch, and said in a lilting voice, “The rest of our guests will be here by the time dessert is served. I’m happy to report that I was successful in convincing the other Rainford wives to join us. Miss Martina Crystal will be here, too. She’s most eager to help us since she escaped Mr. Rainford’s clutches this past Christmas, thanks to Samantha. That’s the good news. The bad news is the newest about-to-be Mrs. Rainford won’t be joining us. I thought it best to let things rest in that regard. It made it easier for me to keep track of Dougie. The newest nuptials are set for the Fourth of July weekend. I know where Mr. Rainford is, and I know how we can snatch him if that’s what you want, but I don’t advise it.”
“You actually found him?” Sam gasped. “How? He was like a phantom. I was actually beginning to believe he didn’t exist except in our minds. The Prizzi law firm wouldn’t tell us a thing.” The others looked speechless.
“Yes, I found him. It wasn’t easy either. Do you want to know why it wasn’t easy?”
“Tell us,” Slick said.
“Douglas Cosmo Rainford, III, is not the man’s real name. I found him on LexisNexis. Miss Crystal just happened to have a bottle of champagne with the most beautiful set of fingerprints a detective could ever hope to find. He brought it to her apartment to celebrate their coming nuptials but she booted him out. She said she kept the bottle, thinking we might want the prints. She also said that old Dougie wanted it back when she told him to hit the road, but she was quicker than he was, and she called him a cheapskate. Then she hid it in a friend’s apartment. Smart lady.”
“If Douglas was using an alias, does that mean we weren’t legally married?” Olivia sputtered.
Joey shrugged. “I’m no lawyer, but I did have an associate visit the law firm of Prizzi, Prizzi, Prizzi, and Prizzi. After hours.” He winked slyly as he whipped his briefcase from under the table and opened it. “You all have a folder. Your ex rated all of you on a scale from one to ten. I don’t know if this will make your day or not, but you all got a ten.”
“I should hope so,” Kayla snapped. “Okay, who were we married to?”
