I tried to reach for her but she’d already pushed past me and was running back down the cliff path, probably to tell Dad what she’d just told me. My hands bunched into fists and I cursed Will under my breath. I should have told Dad what he was up to sooner. As soon as I got back, I would explain about the bolt cutters and the trapdoor. We would lock everything up tight again, and if I saw Will anywhere near the lighthouse then I wouldn’t hesitate to raise the alarm. But I had a few things I wanted to say to him first, so I marched along the path to the hunters’ camp. 150

When I got there, I spotted Will’s lone figure striding towards one of the stone bothies. Ignoring the curious glances of the other hunters, I went straight after him, not caring who saw or heard us.

“Hey!” I grabbed hold of his arm, forcing him to turn round. “How dare you frighten my sister like that? She’s crying her eyes out because of you!”

He shook me off. “Frighten her?” he exclaimed in a frustrated voice. “I’m trying to save her life! I’m trying to save you. She should be frightened. You should all be frightened.”

“Just tell me you didn’t really show her a video on your phone of your sister dying?” I said. “Surely no one could be that messed up?”

Part of me was still hoping this might all be some kind of misunderstanding, but Will only shrugged and said, “Better for her to see it happen to someone else than to have it happen to her—”

My anger bubbled right over, and I found myself shoving Will hard in the chest with both hands. “You’re sick!” I shouted, my voice tearing slightly with the rage I couldn’t contain. “You’re so wrapped up in your own drama but you have no idea what my sister’s been through or what a video like that 151could do to her! Just stay the hell away from her – from all of us!”

The yelling had drawn the other hunters to us, including Will’s father, who I recognized from the hostel. I felt Cailean’s hand on my arm, pulling me back, just as my dad arrived at the camp. I was surprised to see him as normally he hated confrontation of any kind, but there he was beside me, thrusting Cailean away and grabbing my hand.

“Don’t touch my daughter!” he snapped.

Cailean immediately raised his hands in an appeasing gesture. “I’m only trying to diffuse the situation,” he said calmly. “That’s all. Perhaps someone might like to tell me exactly what’s going on?”

Dad repeated what Rosie had told me – that Will had shown her a video on his phone of his sister dying at the lighthouse.
