Chapters (21)
‘It’s called the Kecak dance, honey. It’s called the monkey dance because the sounds they make can sound like a whole bunch of chattering monkeys,’ Grace said.
Daisy didn’t last the distance to the finale, though she loved the lights and the rhythmic movement of the dancers in the circle. The elaborate, even grotesque figures of the Ramayana characters scared her as they appeared on stage.
‘I want to go now,’ she whispered.
‘Let’s go eat then, hey?’ said Grace, feeling relieved. It had been a long day.
They found Steve.
‘We’re going to head to dinner. Are you guys ready?’
Steve was checking his camera. ‘Thanks, but I’m not completely happy with some of these shots of the performance. I’d like to try to get a few more. Then I think we’ll go back to the villa and sort through some of the footage before tomorrow. Perhaps Putu can come back and pick us up after he’s dropped you off at the restaurant,’ he said. He glanced at Lawrence, then returned his gaze to Grace. ‘Do you mind? Will you be okay?’ he added quietly.
‘Yep, no worries,’ Grace replied, though she found herself feeling a bit disappointed.
When they arrived at the restaurant, they saw Tina and Andy sitting at the bar. Andy had changed out of his board shorts; Grace knew he always carried a clean outfit in his car.
‘We’ve been reminiscing,’ said Tina. ‘Would you believe we have a lot of overlapping stories of places and people we knew back in the day?’
‘Not so unusual, I s’pose. There weren’t many tourists here then, and a lot of the same visitors came back each year,’ Andy said. ‘Fancy a drink?’ he asked them.
‘I think we’ll go to our table and get something for Daisy, she’s starving,’ said Grace, taking Daisy’s hand. ‘See you both when you’re ready.’ She felt tense, dreading the thought of an awkward dinner with Lawrence. Just as she was wondering how she’d deal with it, she heard her name being called and spun around to see Johnny and Rosie Chow with a young Balinese man and a couple of other men in expensive but casual outfits.
‘Oh, it’s Johnny Pangisar, my boss!’ She waved them over, introducing Lawrence as ‘my daughter’s father, Lawrence Hagen’.
‘And this is my daughter, Daisy, and my mother, Tina, coming over now,’ Grace said. ‘She and Andy have been reminiscing.’
Johnny and Lawrence shook hands and then Johnny said to Grace, ‘How fortuitous is this? Chef Gede is here. We’re doing the rounds to update him on some of the opposition.’
‘Really? You arrived quickly,’ said Grace, greeting the chef, Rosie, and their entourage.
Rosie explained, ‘Chef Gede sadly had to rush home as his grandfather is unwell.’
