‘Yep. Can’t get enough out there.’ He grinned and started towelling himself dry.
With the beach filming finally over, Grace said, ‘Okay, Steve, let’s go back up to the temple.’
After the ten-minute drive, they all walked along the path where tourists were heading to visit the temple, beginning to gather to watch the sunset and taking their seats for the monkey dance performance in the amphitheatre.
Henry and Mateo stopped to take some stills, and Tina said she was going to find somewhere to sit on her own, away from the other sightseers, to admire the sunset, leaving Steve and Grace to walk together, both silently enjoying the view. Steve was carrying the video camera he used for extra pick-up shots and reference footage.
‘I might get some quick shots here of the tourists,’ he said, and stopped.
‘Fine.’ Grace pulled out the little notebook she carried with her everywhere and checked her scribbled notes from earlier.
Suddenly Steve gasped. ‘Bloody hell . . .’
‘What’s up?’ Grace looked at him.
Then, following his gaze, she was about to scream but Steve grabbed her arm.
‘Shh, don’t startle her!’
‘Oh my God, the bloody fool!’ hissed Grace.
Lawrence and Daisy had left the path and walked around to the edge of the cliff that dropped away with no fence or barrier to the rocks, which looked to be about a hundred metres below. They were standing with their backs to the edge as Lawrence held up his phone, taking a selfie of them both.
Two steps backwards and they’ll be over the edge, thought Grace.
‘Just walk over and call calmly. Let her come to you,’ whispered Steve.
Several tourists had stopped to watch in horror.
With a fixed, if grim, smile on her face, Grace stepped off the path and began walking slowly towards them.
Daisy spotted her, dropped Lawrence’s hand and ran towards her. ‘Hi, Mumma . . .’
Grace clutched her, holding her tight. As Steve led them back to the path, Lawrence took one more photo of himself and strolled over to them.
‘Daisy, stay with Steve for a minute, please.’ Grace hurried towards Lawrence. ‘Are you mad? What were you thinking? You were far too close to the edge. That was so irresponsible!’
‘Nonsense. There were metres behind us before the cliff edge. Don’t be such a hysteric, Grace. You can’t keep her wrapped in cotton wool, you know.’ He walked back to the path, where Steve was holding Daisy’s hand.
‘Are we going to the show, Dad?’ asked Daisy.
‘Sure. But let’s go and look around the temple some more first. See you at the amphitheatre in a little while, eh?’ Smiling pointedly, Lawrence took Daisy’s hand and led her towards the temple ruins.
‘I don’t think I can stand this.’ Grace dropped her face in her hands.
Steve touched her arm. ‘It’s okay. Don’t think about it. Daisy is fine.’
