‘Hi, Daddy.’ Daisy opened the door and led Lawrence out to the garden. ‘Come and see my drawings of the chooks I saw at the markets this morning.’

Grace closed her laptop when she heard Daisy and looked up as they came over to the garden table. ‘Lawrence, back so soon. Did you enjoy dinner last night? Daisy said you bought her Coke and chips.’

Before he could answer, the gong sounded again at the front door and Tina called out that she would answer it.

Grace stood up as Andy and Tina came out.

‘Hi, Grace.’ Andy gave a big smile. ‘Hey, Daisy Doll!’

Daisy ran to him. ‘Hi, Andy! What’s happening?’ This was how he’d started greeting Daisy and she had latched onto it.

Andy chuckled. He patted her head and strode over to Lawrence, extending his hand. ‘Hi, I’m Andy Franklin.’

Lawrence shook hands. ‘Lawrence Hagen. Grace’s husband. Daisy’s father.’

‘This is nice, eh, Daisy.’ Andy held back any comment about the surprise arrival, but he glanced very briefly at Grace.

Daisy tugged at Andy. ‘So what’s happening?’ she repeated.

‘Daisy, I’m sure we can find something nice to do together,’ said Lawrence.

Andy looked at Daisy. ‘Your mum is working with Steve to shoot the action out at Uluwatu this arvo,’ he said. ‘So I thought I’d go along, be an extra and have a surf. Would you like to come too, Tina?’ He smiled at her.

‘Yes, thank you. I don’t think I’ll be riding that wave, but a beach walk and to see it again would be lovely.’

‘Doesn’t sound like our sort of thing. I’ll take Daisy for an early dinner again,’ said Lawrence.

‘After what you bought her to eat last night? I don’t think –’ began Grace.

‘What’s Oo-loo . . .?’ interrupted Daisy, looking disappointed.

Andy turned back to Daisy. ‘Uluwatu. It’s pretty cool out there. It’s one of the best places in Bali to watch the sunset, and there’s a performance of a monkey dance on this evening.’

‘Monkey dance!’ squealed Daisy.

‘Not real monkeys, honey,’ said Andy. ‘But there’re lots of real monkeys out at the temple. Maybe we can have a walk along the beach then make our way up to the clifftop, that’s where the temple is.’

Daisy turned beseeching eyes on Lawrence. ‘I want to go, Daddy, to see the monkey dance.’

‘Maybe your dad’s not very interested.’ Grace was damned if she was letting Lawrence join them when she was working.

But he gave one of his winning smiles. ‘I’d love to see the monkey dance. Or we can see the real monkeys. Then afterwards we can have a nice family dinner. Shall I book a table somewhere nearby?’

Tina and Grace exchanged a look, but Andy stepped in quickly.
